I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. Revelation 6:8a
I've always wondered for the longest time, is hades its talking about here:
1.Will Hell (hades)be unleashed on earth? i'm talking about actual hell, where the dead are and with its horrors?
2.Or is Hades merely a symbol for death?
:thinking

Hear we see death and Hell personified. :banned The scripture explains itself here in this verse. Death is taking one fourth of the earth with the sword, famine, pestilence and wild beasts. Hell is the abode and destination of the dead. Therefore, Hell is following behind death.
It will certainly not be very pleasant. However, I don't believe that the verse is implying that there will be walking dead or spirits of the dead:hide or that Hell itself will actually be on the surface of the earth.:runaway

Well thing is I do realize that there will be no walking dead lol, but will the earth take on the characteristics of hell itself? Along will all the horrors and terror?
I see in revelation 9 the abyss being opened, and the demonic creatures being unleashed(please understand that I know its not the same event) but if this can happen, how plausible will it be for hell to be unleashed on the kingdom of Antichrist? Due to the fact that Satan is on the throne?

Eek! Surely there won't be ghosts, zombies, or vampires wandering this planet. That would be too horrific even for the Tribulation!

'Hades' is synonymous with 'sheol', and means 'the grave'.

I think it's fair to say that the earth will take on some of the characteristics of Hell. Especially the people in it being in torment.

The Abyss is not the same thing as Hell. (See my post below)
Due to the fact that Satan is on the throne?
Satan is already the ruler of the world. He is not the ruler of Hell or the Abyss or any of the other places of the dead.

'Hades' is synonymous with 'sheol', and means 'the grave'.
Hoot brings up a good point. There are many names for the unseen world. The term used in Revelation 6:8 is Hades. It is an untranslated Greek word and is the grave or the place of the dead.
Here is a summary of Dr. Fruchtenbaum’s study on this from appendix 9 in Footsteps of the Messiah
Places that contain the righteous and the unrighteous dead
Sheol – Hebrew
Hades – Greek
These are the same thing. They are both the place of the souls of the dead. There is an area for the souls of the unrighteous dead and an area for the souls of the righteous dead.
Unrighteous
Abbadon – Hebrew word meaning destruction, the bad side of Sheol.
The Pit – An OT term synonymous with Abbadon, the bad side of Sheol.
Hell – An English word that we use for the bad side of Sheol. It is therefore synonymous with Abbadon.
The Abyss – A term from the NT. A place of temporary confinement for fallen angels. During the MK, Satan is confined in the Abyss.
Tartarus – A term used in 2Peter 2:4. A place of permanent confinement for angels. The angels who married human women in Genesis are in Tartarus.
Gehenna – A permanent place of torment for angels and both the body and soul of people.
Lake of Fire – A descriptive term for Gehenna.
Righteous
Abraham’s Bosom – The good side of Sheol.
Paradise – Before Jesus’ resurrection, Paradise was in Abraham’s Bosom in Sheol. Now it is in Heaven.
Heaven (third Heaven) – The abode of God, the elect angels and now, Paradise.
The New Jerusalem – More or less synonymous with Heaven.
