Kim Ki-deok, a 45-year-old resident in the area, said that the high tidal wave abruptly hit anglers and tourists. ``The high wave came so suddenly from a relatively calm sea and swept dozens of people off the breakwater.''
The wave, which subsided about 10 minutes after hitting the coast at 12.41 p.m., pulled nearly 50 people into the sea. Fishing boats on the scene rescued about 30 people right after the incident.

Tidal Waves Kill Nine in South Korea
May 5, 2008
SEOUL: More than nine people were killed and 14 injured yesterday after being swept away by a sudden large wave that crashed over a breakwater on South Korea's west coast.
The wave - believed to have been as high as 5m (16.4 ft) - slammed over the breakwater near a beach southwest of Seoul where dozens of people had been fishing and sightseeing, said an official.

Rescuers Fail to Find More Wave Survivors
May 5, 2008
Rescuers were unable to find additional survivors Monday in seas off a breakwater in Jukdo, Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province, where a giant tidal wave claimed nine lives and injured 27, Sunday.
About 700 personnel, alongside divers and helicopters were mobilized from early Monday morning to search for 13 people still listed as missing.
Local authorities initially announced a total of 50 had been swept into the seas by the abnormally high tidal wave, but concluded the actual number was uncertain as the former was based on witnesses' statements.
The exact cause of the tidal wave is still puzzling meteorologists and experts.

Also, Prof. Choi Byeong-ho at Sungkyunkwan University said that he didn't think the breakwater caused the wave. ``We need to review various factors to discover its origin,'' he said.
Witnesses said the tidal wave that slammed into the breakwater was at least 10 meters high. ``The sea water receded at once like an ebb tide and then a high wave smashed into the breakwater and rocks sweeping anglers and tourists into the sea,'' a witness said.

Myanmar Warned on Cyclone, not Tidal Wave - U.N. (http://in.reuters.com/article/southAsiaNews/idINIndia-33453120080507)
May 7, 2008
Myanmar appears to have alerted its people that a powerful cyclone was on its way, but lacked information about the deadly storm surge that came with it, the United Nations weather agency said on Wednesday.-But it was the accompanying tidal wave -- which was as high as 12 feet (3.5 metres) -- that caused the most devastation in Myanmar, where officials say 22,500 people have died, 41,000 are missing and 1 million lost their homes.

These scriptures came to mind when reading these stories this morning:
The Return of Christ
25"There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
27"(V (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=49&chapter=21&version=49#cen-NASB-25854V))Then they will see (W (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=49&chapter=21&version=49#cen-NASB-25854W))THE SON OF MAN COMING IN A CLOUD with power and great glory.
28"But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because (X (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=49&chapter=21&version=49#cen-NASB-25855X))your redemption is drawing near."
29Then He told them a parable: "Behold the fig tree and all the trees;
30as soon as they put forth leaves, you see it and (Y (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=49&chapter=21&version=49#cen-NASB-25857Y))know for yourselves that summer is now near.
31"So you also, when you see these things happening, recognize that (Z (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=49&chapter=21&version=49#cen-NASB-25858Z))the kingdom of God is near.
