It seems companies are speeding up Off-Shoring US jobs at a quickened pace as of late, my job soon to be included at a undetermined date (IT field), anyone else encountering this? I have begin to put my feelers out but the IT field is drying up pretty quick least for jobs in the United States, now if I wanted to move to India and work for 1/8 of what I make now i could get any number of positions.

I hear ya. Last year I got three different contracts, this year it's been nothing. Nobody, not even wal-mart will hire me. I didn't go to school for nothing!

I've been in the IT field since i was 17, i'm 33 now. I have learned to stay away form the larger companies. Find a smaller company that specializes in small business. Your average small business can not out source over seas. I was with Seimens Business Services for 4 years servicing the Verison account they had. After 3 years even the people i called in to for updates and such had been replaced with a group from India. Very frustrating, but when you chase the dollar there is no moral compass and or reason for companies to keep people when they can get cheaper, and capitalism keeps moving.

GEMS off-shored my job (China) in 2002 (The company is now closed). I haven't had permanent work since. I designed the power supply for the touch entry controllers for their MRI systems as well the package of the controller. I did a lot of other techy things too for companies like Boeing, Raytheon, etc.; all off shore now. I live in NW Ohio where heavy manufacturing WAS the mainstay of the area ... same as Southern Michigan, Northern Indiana, Western Pennsylvania, etc. With gasoline prices shooting up and less folks buying American vehicles, the area is drying up fast. When a car company closes or moves, there are dozens of other mid-level manufacturers put out of business also .... It's just a down economy around the Great Lakes area. Electronics (hardware) is not anything in the US anymore. I guess I'm just a fossil. :)

Well I am 45 yrs old and that is getting long in the tooth for IT, being this is my 3rd career I am not sure what is next, at the moment I am still employed and if you compare my skill level vs the Indians, it is no contest I got them beat but it's not about who's the best it's all about the money. I came into IT back when sky was the limit on salary, I started my 1st job with no experience other than a BA making 65k and moved up ever since so I have been blessed by God.
Issachar you are not a fossil no more than I am....

:) Thanks! :hat I don't think so either, even at 56 .... but I get the feeling lately that the "world" thinks so. I've been turned down on numerous jobs over the past 3 years that I was at least fully qualified for .... most of them were through friends I know at these companies (love that word of mouth thing) ... so I was able to get feed back on what happened ..... 100% of the time they hired someone at least 20 years younger than me.
I am very glad that God is my provider and not some worldly company. Savings is long gone ... house? Almost taken away a few times now. I have six children but 4 are married and doing fine .... with two still at home, 17 (finishing up his junior year) and 14 (she is in 9th grade this Fall), if our Lord allows, we'll hang on to it for another few years. My wife and I are of the same mind in just about all areas of thinking, including that the house can go if necessary once the children are out of the nest. Maybe I'll have some income in the mean time and can get out of it voluntarily when the time comes.

Well my kids are out of the house, house payment is very low and land is paid for but other than that I am debt free, it's been my blessing when God closed one door he opened up a better one soon afterwards, maybe he will see fit to do it again. I could go back into consulting but it's a feast or famine kinda deal. Like I said I could go to the oil fields as I have a Class A CDL and Heavy Equipment rating or even go back on the road driving again... but that is my least favorite option.
