The lungs of the planet - the Amazon - could be wiped out within half a century as a result of too much clean air, writes Roger Highfield.
The vast rainforest, so crucial to the Earth's climate, is coming under threat from attempts to curb the pollution that causes acid rain, warn UK and Brazilian climate scientists.
Their new study in Nature reports a link between reducing sulphur dioxide emissions from burning coal and increasing sea surface temperatures in the tropical north Atlantic, resulting in a heightened risk of drought in the Amazon rainforest.
The link was found by a team from the University of Exeter, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Met Office Hadley Centre and Brazilian National Institute for Space Studies.
A 2005 drought caused widespread devastation across the Amazon basin and the team estimates that by 2025 a drought on this scale could happen every other year and by 2060 a drought could occur in nine out of every ten years.

But...but...what happened to the rainforest when the industrial age wasn't yet there to cause the acid rain? :scratch
This is a deep and profound mystery! :hehee

Volcano's create more acid rain in one eruption than man can in decades of running their cars, factories & power plants...... Shhhhh don't let anybody know you are using logic

Yep, and that's why most living things are all killed within miles of a volcanic eruption. Just because something natural creates more polution and destruction than our human activities doesn't mean we shouldn't endevor to reduce the percentage we do contribute to. It's like saying it's okay to dump mercury in the nearby lake just because a factory downstream dumps twice as much.
I doubt I will ever understand why so many conservatives seem so opposed to taking care of the Earth for future generations.

Doubt I will ever understand why so many liberals seem so apposed to using the natural renewable resources we have available to us.
The amount of pollution man contributes is minuscule compared to what volcanoes produce every year, I was not saying anything about illicit dumping of chemicals into the Eco system, but it is only man that is saying acid rain is bad, there are many trees that need an acidic soil in order to thrive and propagate and yep the volcano's provide that nutrition for them. The animals that die when an eruption occurs, either were suffocated or burned in the initial blast or breathed in to much silicate from the ash and suffocate later. but with in months after a volcanic eruption animals and plants start reestablishing them selves. Says something for the creation that God created that is so resilient
