Protestants and Sola Scriptura
Scripture, our Evangelical friends tell us, is the inerrant Word of God. Quite right, the Catholic replies; but how do you know this to be true?
It's not an easy question for Protestants, because, having jettisoned Tradition and the Church, they have no objective authority for the claims they make for Scripture. There is no list of canonical books anywhere in the Bible, nor does any book (with the exception of St. John's Apocalypse) claim to be inspired. So, how does a "Bible Christian" know the Bible is the Word of God?

The holy spirit testifies to the truth when you read the word. Without being a born again believer you are just reading words on paper that may or may not make sense. But being a born again believer I can vouch that now the word is ALIVE. Isaiah 6:9 ..."be ever hearing but never understanding, be ever seeing, but not perceiving " , Matt. 13:13-14, Mark 4:12, Luke 8:10.

My favorite part of this article is where the author says in response to "So, how does a "Bible Christian" know the Bible is the Word of God?":
If he wants to avoid a train of thought that will lead him into the Catholic Church, he has just one way of responding: With circular arguments pointing to himself (or Luther or the Jimmy Swaggart Ministries or some other party not mentioned in the Bible) as an infallible authority telling him that it is so.
What on earth does he think he's doing by relying on the Pope??? :idunno

"having jettisoned Tradition and the Church"
Don't need to go much beyond this part...
Their traditions are only that, traditions of men.
The true church is invisible.

Roman Catholic apologists will almost always present the classic appeal to man's wisdom over God's Wisdom.
It usually does not vary from the standard "...blah....blah....blah....; but how do YOU know this to be true?"
That foolish question is a fairly strong proof that the Holy Spirit is little more than a "pious concept" to them. A real understanding of the Holy Spirit's role would not allow such a question to cross one's mind as an argument or appeal, when discussing God's Truths.

It does make you wonder why they choose to attempt to use their particular tradition as somehow proving 'you' wrong. Something like....
"We know that we, the mother church, compiled the scriptures, therefore that makes us right on everything."
I agree that such an appeal is completely fleshly, meant to elevate themselves over God's word, invariably leading them back to traditions of men being their guiding principles. We all know what God thinks about mans traditions when they get in the way of His clear and direct message, yet this seems to escape them and they desire to maintain their grasp on their own glory. Sounds a lot like the leaders in Christ's day repackaged.
In fact, the scriptures themselves declare that the Hebrew people are the ones who were entrusted with God's word, and that includes the NT. Somehow, that is lost on their modern ears.

I think we all know the reasons why the RC Church, along with other misguided churches and cults, want to include man's traditions and "wisdom" as a necessary (equal) part of understanding the Truths of God's Word.
It puts THEM in the position of power, which Scripture allows no man to presume to have. They want to replace the role of the Holy Spirit in their quest for leadership in both spiritual and worldly matters. Instead of being God's servants in dispensing and preaching the simple gospel of Jesus Christ, they prefer being the "lord" over others as they pretend to serve God.
The Bible is very clear about what happens when false shepherds use their "traditions" etc. to insist that they should have the final say in what is right.
No longer does the rule of faith come from the unfailing Truth of God's Word, but it then rests in the hands of fallible men.
People, who blindly obey such false shepherds, end up being exactly like those Jews who had a part in crucifying Jesus. One day they are praising and glorifying the King of Glory, and the next day they are obeying their false shepherds in shouting "crucify Him!".

And we know what Jesus had to say about the traditions of men...
This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. Matthew 15:8-9 (KJV)
