My boys and I have decided that we'd like to learn Hebrew... not just conversational like if you were going to go on a vacation there, but actually LEARN the language. Anyone have suggestions on a curriculum, book, etc... which would teach us the language of Hebrew (much like you'd learn Spanish, French, etc...) that would be good for kids? I looked at Rosetta Stone, but the price is PROHIBITIVE! I support the Zola Levitt ministry and they have a Hebrew learning program, but I don't know if it would be friendly for kids or if it's more of an adult course... A lot of the stuff I found on CBD was for college or seminary students. Anyone?

I have no idea; Rosetta Stone really is a good program, but the cost is a bit much. Have you tried their demo for Hebrew on the website. Maybe if you actually try it, then if you really do like it, you and your boys could start saving up to get it. If you try vendors on e-bay, you may get a better price. I saved for months to buy mine and I got it on e-bay for about $100 less than I would have from Rosetta Stone, but I kept watching.

Try "The Learnables" program. It is an language immersion program that is more cost effective than Rosetta. Many in our homeschooling group have used their program for various languages with good success.
Here is the beginning Hebrew that they offer:

I looked at their offering and it looked pretty good, but there was no basic stuff like alphabet, writing Hebrew, reading Hebrew, etc.... just pictures and then you listen to the words (or at least that's my understanding). I was looking for something a little more comprehensive. Reading, speaking and writing. Kinda like you'd learn from taking German, French or Spanish in public school. You wouldn't just learn to speak a new language, but read it and write it as well. Thanks for the link, and let me know if I'm misunderstanding the product. =)

In His love,Hey Di, your DH used to work with a couple of guys who might be able to point you in the right direction or even be tutors. You might check that resource.
Probably see you guys in July for a couple of weeks.

In His love,
If you scroll down a bit, you will see it says "Step 2 - Reading: Basic Structures". This is the part that gives instruction on reading and writing.
It is designed to work with the "Step 1 - Listening". You would use these together perhaps spending one day on Listening/Speaking and the next day on Reading/Writing in an alternate manner.
If you scroll down a bit farther you will see that both the "Step 1 - Listening" and "Step 2 - Reading" are offered in one package.
If you scroll down to the very bottom you will see a link for "Hebrew 2". Hebrew 2 teaches more of the grammatical aspects after you have mastered listening/speaking and reading.
It is much the same way that we learn English as children. We learn to listen and speak before we learn to read and write before we learn grammar rules. Even as adults we acquire languages best in this manner. That is why Rosetta Stone, The Learnables, and other immersion programs work so well. It is because you really LEARN the language the way our brains naturally acquire language.
Hope that helps. :)

Check The Jerusalem Post and other Israeli websites. I've seen numerous links to learn Hebrew on thoses sites. Some may be free.

I've heard Rosetta Stone can be checked out at the library but haven't checked it out for myself. A previous homeschool mom, now teacher, friend, told me even if they don't carry it, the library will order any book, video, etc. for you.
