I am playing around with the idea of doing medical transcription. Right now I homeschool my elementary aged kids and that is a full time job. But, I am hoping that once they get to middle and high school they will be much more independent and that will free me up to hopefully do some money making work from home.

For those of you that do it do you work for yourself or someone else? Where is the best place to get educated? What is an average price of education?

I was looking at this website and want some feedback from those of you "in the know" if you think it is a legitimate business or not. :thinking

Any information that you can give me to think on would be greatly appreciated. I have a couple of years yet before I will be ready to seriously decide but I want to take this time to explore and pray about it.

I had tossed around that idea as well. I have a friend that did that for years and made some serious money. But then they outsourced all the jobs (out of the country) and she went from being too busy for daily activities to NOTHING. She had to give it up and find a job outside the home. That ended my hope of getting into that.

This probably doesn't help, but this is what I know about it. :lol2

I can tell you were at the CHAP convention! I stopped by that booth too!

Wish I had known you were there, I would have loved to have met you in "real life".

Funny, my girlfriend and I were there and we are both RNs. I still work (just 4 midnights a month - but that is enough with home schooling 3 kiddos), but would love to do something at home.

While I was trying to investigate the company this weekend, I went to an MT chat room, and on the home page they had that company listed as one of the at home courses.

I have also looked at telephone triage from home (you know, the RNs you end up talking to when you call the doctor's office after- hours), but they want you to train for 2-3 weeks at their home offices. What HS mom could be gone for 3 weeks?! I can't even imagine the state of my children or house when I returned!:fear That's why I was so interested in this course.

I was wondering about that also, so I did ask about that at the CHAP vendor booth. The rep. said only about 15% of all accounts are being outsourced and right now they are trying to introduce legislature to make it illegal since foreign countries are not bound by HIPPA regulations (that was from a salesperson trying to sell a product, I haven't seen any actual numbers - but I know our hospital still does their own transcription).

Interesting that you bring that up because that was one of my concerns. I told my mom that this will probably get outsourced because since it is done on the computer then you can be anywhere in the world to do it. Why would they want to pay me $20 an hour when someone in India will do it for a fraction of that. :thinking

:lol2 Yep! That would have been so cool to meet you! Who knows, we might have stood in line next to each other. :idunno:heh

I have a good friend at church who has been doing this over 25 years. She has her own business but has scaled back greatly recently. I picked her brain about it as well. This isn't the first time I've talked to her about it but seeing that lady at CHAP got me thinking about it again.

I would HATE to put in all that money and time to get trained only to have to compete with outsourcing. :tsk

I am a medical transcriptionist working in a hospital. It's true that most transcription jobs are outsourced to other countries, but I work in a specialty clinic and our reports are quite involved and complex. That's is why they have us (2) transcriptionists on board.

The way I came about this job though is somewhat of a fluke. For those of you who remember, about 5 years ago I got let go from my job as an Administrative Assistant to the Medical Chief of Staff at a hospital. I spent many months applying for hospital Admin Assistant jobs with no success. I signed up with some job agencies and the types of jobs that they were assigning me to were transcription jobs (I have a high typing speed and at that point had some knowledge of medical terms.) I took a medical terminology course at nightschool in a community college.

This job that I have now was originally an assignment job from the agency. The clinic was looking to hire someone on a full time basis. They liked my work and that is how I got in. I am lucky though. Getting a job in a hospital here in Toronto is very hard.

I'm glad that I have a few years to stew on this so I can see which way the wind blows with the outsourcing.
