The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned in March that Iran had detected a new highly pathogenic strain of wheat stem rust called Ug99.
The fungal disease could spread to other wheat producing states in the Near East and western Asia that provide one-quarter of the world’s wheat.
The FAO warned stated east of Iran — Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan to be on high alert.

THIS must be why Oreo cookies have gone through the roof !! I was going to buy cookies today and for a regular size package they were 4.69!! For COOKIES ?? GAK ! Everything is getting so expensive. Any and all things containing wheat has shot up. I did not buy them, I am not going to spend 5 bucks on cookies. I came home and made chocolate chip instead. But...... I was really really in a Oreo mood :hehee

Amish Whoopie Pie (Sweet revenge for the price for Oreo's :))
Cookies:
1 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
1 cup hot water with 2 tsp baking soda
4 1/2 cups flour
4 eggs
3/4 cup cocoa
1 cup sour milk
2 tsp vanilla
1 or 2 shakes of salt
Filling:
1 cup milk
1 cup shortening
4 Tbls flour
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup sugar
Mix cookie ingredients together. Batter is slightly thick so it can be dropped from a teaspoon. Drop onto cookie sheets into small rounds, trying to keep them roughly the same size. Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes on an ungreased cookie sheet. For the filling: cook together the milk and flour until thick. Place in a small bowl and add sugar, shortening and vanilla. Beat until spread-able. Choose two cookies about the same size, spread some filling on one and place the other one on top, bottoms together

I guess it is a good thing I can't have wheat! I already pay higher prices for gluten free bread and such. Wonder it the price of it will go up as people who can't afford wheat start using potato flour and such?
