I filled up my pickup with diesel today. The price changed three times by the time I got done! Well it seemed like it. At 4.68 per gallon, Indiana Jones will hafta wait for me to see it when it comes out:thumb

Even at that price the cost per mile is less than a gasser especially if you tow anything. I'm expecting to get around 8-9 mpg towing my 30' travel trailer with my 2001 Ram 4x4 w/360. Needless to say, we're not going very far with it.

I thought $4.49 was bad...I choked when I read your $4.68.
What is this going to do to our food prices?

I have a 2003 ram, no 4x4. I heard the 2001 was the best. I haul roll off dumpsters and get 13 to 14 if fuel filters are clean. Anywhere from 10000 to 14000 lbs being pulled per load. Today diesel going all the way up to 4.89 in places! Looks like I have to sell another dumpster!:twitch

Poor truckers. I feel so badly for them. I don't see how the prices of things can even remotely remain stable. From the looks of things, I'm guessing our economy will get much worse before it gets better if gas prices don't come down soon.

A 2008 Chevy Duramax gets an overall average of 13 this includes city driving, highway driving both empty and loaded. The Duramax option was $8000. My gas burning Chevy 454 carburated standard ignition gets 7 mpg loaded on the highway and 9 mpg empty on the highway or around town. With current gasoline costs at $3.60 per gallon for gasoline and assuming 8mpg it costs $.45 per mile in fuel to drive my 1 ton. My brother's 08 Duramax burning $4.40 per gallon diesel costs $.34 per mile. a savings of $.11 per mile. It will take 72,727 miles to pay for this option not including the extra service a diesel takes. It's awefully hard for me to justify a diesel rig when the payback on the initial investment is that far down the road.
Diesel is a better option for fuel mileage I just wish the automakers wouldn't gouge us for this extra economy. Diesel also carries a higher percent of the road taxes. Thus while saving fuel the government is taxing us more to do it. Makes a whole lot of sense to me!

There was a 3-yr-old in my sons' library class yesterday named "Diesel." I feel bad for him.

That 13MPG seems low. Most guys I know with a CTD get mid to high teens in the city and solid mid 20's highway. But the CTD is an I-6. I know Ford has a V-8 but I don't know about Chevy.

It probably is a little low for national avg. My brother pulls a large enclosed racing trailer 50% of the time and that thing really catches the wind. He did say the mileage running empty, without a trailer at 80 mph was about 12 mpg. I guess he could do better economy if he would slow down a little bit!!!! But then again he wouldn't be my little brother if he wasn't running 90 to nothing.

Geesh and I though my F150 302 was bad at 17-18 mpg. Of course if it's too heavy to haul in my truck, I'll ship it by rail. :hehee
Still it's expensive to mow with my Kubota. I'll have to check how many hours on a tank full - about 5 gal lasts 8 hours? But still cheaper than my Snapper.
