I would really appreciate any advice you can offer on this topic. I recently acquired some tomato plants (4) from a nice older lady selling them out of the back of her truck. The plants are about 4 inches high and presently each one is in a styrofoam cup.

I would like to put the plants into containers so I can move them around in my yard until I determine how much sun they require, etc. I have different sizes of plastic buckets that I have been collecting from bakeries for this purpose.

What soil mix should I use to plant these? Also, should I poke holes in the buckets to provide drainage? Is there anything else I should do?

Thanks!

I say once you plant them, leave them there.. Do you have a nice spot picked out already? I mixed manure in the dirt in my garden. I haven't used any fertilizer yet this year as we are toying with the idea of organic, and mine are turning out great. Do you know what kind of tomatoes they are?

They need full sun, so pick a sunny spot. I grow mine in containers too. It works great!!

Plenty of sun, put drainage holes in the bottom and feed with potash and water regularly. Make sure they are well staked if they are the cordon type.

I got this link from another thread on rr - it is very good if you run into problems. ( I sell tomato plants commercially)

i have used 5 gallon buckets before. determinate type tomatoes are easier in them, they don't run amok so much ... yes, drainage holes in the bottom- properly crocked... use a nice, organic potting mix and some aged manure... fertilize with fish emulsion...IIRR...

keep them in the sunniest spot you have...

Did you plant them in a container or ground?

Thanks for asking! I planted each plant in a medium sized bucket. I used Miracle Grow potting soil as the dirt because it has the fertilizer and vermiculate already mixed in. I still need to add the drainage holes though....

Did you plant them in a container or ground?

get those drain holes in asap. Root rot will kill em fast.

My whole garden is in 5 gallon buckets, I really enjoy the portability :nod
