Trying to help a friend get Word onher computer. She had works but not Word, It is giving her errors.

Specifically error 1519 when trying to install Profesional Edition Office 2000.

I have trouble shooted this before and found it to be because of a previour free version being expired, from when computer was bought. SHe couldn't do the trouble shooting herself, so I am supposed to get the computer tonight to do any registry changes, etc..

but I was surprised when she asked me this: Why do I need Word?'

well, you can't write .docs or share .docs, which is the standard in PC word processing, it is better than wordperfect or corel, etc....

I mean, I know she is frustrated, but I am used to this kind of thing, as a PC troubleshooter, etc...

Anyone can help with the error 1519 ? She said she did the windows installer cleanup, she also did a regcleaner.. and it still won't let her install.

We have killed everything except Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook. She doesn't know her email passwords so I was reluctant to kill that older version.

I think she would trust a program on her system more; Don't think her ISP is good.

Open Office is good, but I prefer Abiword (http://www.abisource.com/) over OO.o Writer. It's a lot lighter and quicker.

Open Office is installed locally on the PC...it's a nice office suite, by the way.

What version of Works does she have? I have version 8.0 (2004) and I can open and save .doc files. Though it does convert them to .wps files. Strange.

I don't know what Works she has. WE kinda removed it all. She'll have to go back to a restore point if she doesn't want me to finish getting the registry to accept the new Word.

What I read tonight shows if we didn't empty her temp files, the old version is still 'there' AND if we didn't stop all virus programs, etc, it could be still hanging on to the old version.

She didn't bring her tower to work. She says if she can't get Microsoft tonight to help her she is giving up....

Never had anyone refuse to improve something when I am offering to do it for free, including the Word software.

I think she doesn't think I know what I am doing.

Yeah my mother is the same way when it comes to the software she uses. People just get comfortable with what they have been used to. I even stuck with Works for years until just recently, but I still go back to it every once and a while.

I will pray that all your computer bugs will go away and you will be able to install Word without anymore problems. I've prayed numerous times about my computer and it is amazing how the Lord answers. :yeah

I hope she will let me. I know I can get it.

But she doesn't trust me or something... thinks it's major.... or something/// I emailed her tonight some tips to try, and that if she doesn't want me to help her just bring my cd's back and restore and keep using Works....

That's all that you can really do. A friend from work was having similar problems her nephew built her a computer, but he didn't use new software and they can't update it is giving them an error that it is not registered. I told her that her nephew installed software that was already used and now, when you build new PC's you have to use brand new software so that it will register and update correctly (Depending upon what software you have there may be limitations to 2-5 computers depending upon the software and type) and her stuff is not updating properly and is not registered. (He used his copies to save money and make money off of them) so now they are in a pickle. I think she is buying a new computer soon I hope your friend's computer gets fixed soon for her. She is silly to not let you help her with it, but what can you do? Not much really, well when she doesn't have a Virus program she at least can't say that you did something to it you know. Good luck!
