Emerging Church Author Promotes Evolutionary Consciousness, Tolle
Canadian emerging church author and pastor, Bruce Sanguin, doesn’t pull any punches. In a post on “Evolutionary Christianity” he writes the following:
“…This is happening continuously. Scientists call it cosmogenesis - ongoing creation. Congregations therefore are most vital when they are domains of creative emergence, engaged in the “new thing” God is doing to quote the prophet Isaiah. Our primary task therefore is not proclaiming redemption through Christ’s blood. It’s enacting the creative agency of God known in and through Jesus - who ushered in a new creation based in forgiveness, compassion for the left-behinds, and a toppling of systems of domination.
When I say that the Spirit is moving through the cosmos and through us therefore (as the human mode of cosmic presence), I don’t mean to suggest Intelligent Design. There’s no divine blueprint, and there is no predetermined future awaiting for us to arrive at. This bias toward increased complexity, consciousness and compassion is a non-coercive bias. God doesn’t act in the universe through an exercise of unilateral power, but rather love. This involves a divine Self-emptying that enables creation to evolve in freedom.”

Does any of this sound familiar? Can you think of any other emerging leaders who are saying the same things? Sanguin believes in the same doctrine of evolutionary consciousness as all New Agers, including the grandmother of the emerging New Age spirituality, Barbara Marx Hubbard. Clear here to visit her thoughts at the Center for Conscious Evolution. Pastor Sanguin praises the work of Eckhart Tolle except for one flaw he sees: Tolle doesn’t reference the evolutionary process nearly enough in his view.
The only difference between Bruce Sanguin and many of his American emerging church counterparts is that he is completely open and honest in his spiritual program for the world. He comes right out and says that he believes in evolution, that he rejects redemption through Christ’s blood as the core message of the church, that he supports New Age teachers like Eckhart Tolle and his consciousness teachings, and he’d like to see all churches embrace his religious model based on the cosmic christ he believes in. At least we know exactly where he stands unlike some of his fog blowing emerging church cohorts here in the US who use slight-of-tongue to throw off concerned Christians.
