Indonesia raises alert status on Java volcano


JAKARTA (AFP) — Indonesian scientists stepped up the alert level for a volcano in East Java and told people to stay away from the crater amid fears it is building up to an eruption.

The alert for Mount Kelut was raised to the third of a four-level warning system, the vulcanology office website said Sunday.

New Zealand Volcano Erupts

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — An erupting volcano sent ash and steam nearly three miles into the air Tuesday, while mud and rocks raced down the mountainside and injured at least three people, officials said.

The Mount Ruapehu eruption sent mud sweeping through a ski area, prompting officials to evacuate the zone and close nearby roads, local district council spokesman Paul Wheatcroft said.

Indonesian Volcano Poised to Erupt


JAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesia warned that one of its most deadly volcanos was poised to erupt and ordered nearly 30,000 villagers living along the mountain's slopes to evacuate late Tuesday.

Mount Kelud, which has been rumbling for weeks, was placed on the highest alert level, meaning scientists believe a major eruption is imminent, said a posting on the government-run volcanology center Web site.

The status requires local authorities to begin evacuations.
