Volcano Erupted in Kamchatka
Bezymyannyi volcano threw out ash to the height of 5 to 7 kilometres

VLADIVOSTOK, October 16, vladivostoktimes.com Bezymyannyi volcano, located in the Ust-Kamchatka District, erupted on October 15.

Seismologists registered a sudden increase in activity of the volcano at 3:30 a.m. local time. Scientists think giant volcano kept erupting for two hours. It threw out columns of ash to the height of 5 to 7 km. The ash shower covered dozens of kilometres around the volcano,

Residents flee mudflows from Philippine volcano slope

Oct 16, 2007, 5:36 GMT
Manila - More than 100 residents fled their homes in an eastern Philippine province on Tuesday as heavy rains triggered mudflows from a restive volcano, the government said.

The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said 165 people residing on the slopes of Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon province, 405 kilometres south-east of Manila, were evacuated to safer areas.

Quakes near Quesnel may signal lava flow
Larry Pynn, Vancouver Sun
Published: Tuesday, October 16, 2007
Scientists are headed today to a remote area about 100 kilometres west of Quesnel to install seismic equipment and determine whether a "swarm" of small earthquakes is evidence of a forthcoming burst of molten lava -- the first volcanic activity in Canada in almost two centuries.

"It's pretty exciting to see this," John Cassidy, earthquake seismologist with Natural Resources Canada, said in an interview. "The earthquakes are continuing, even today. We should have some answers soon."

The story began last Wednesday when existing seismic equipment located, appropriately enough, at Thunder Mountain, about 30 kilometres south of where the earthquakes are happening, began recording earthquake activity.

Indonesian Volcano Poised to Erupt
By NINIEK KARMINI – 3 hours ago

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesian authorities on Tuesday ordered the evacuation of nearly 30,000 people from the rumbling slopes of Mount Kelud, warning of an imminent eruption from the volcano that killed thousands in 1990.

All people living within six miles of the 5,679-foot peak must evacuate, and authorities began transporting some out of the danger zone, said Surono, a top scientist at the government-run volcanology center who uses only one name.

Kelud has been rumbling for weeks, and it was placed on the highest alert level, meaning scientists believe a major eruption is imminent, according to the center's Web site.

One of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, it last erupted in 1990, destroying about 100 villages and killing 5,160 people. It is located on Java island, about 385 miles east of the capital, Jakarta,

BLITAR, Indonesia, Oct 19 (AFP) Oct 19, 2007
Pressure at a simmering Indonesian volcano on Java island escalated Friday, a geologist warned, as armed police forced some defiant villagers to evacuate ahead of a potential eruption.
More than 15,000 lives have been claimed since record-keeping began of Mount Kelut's eruptions, including an estimated 10,000 in a catastrophic 1586 eruption.
A 1919 eruption spewed heat clouds that killed 5,160 people. The last eruption in 1990 left 34 people dead.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity. The archipelago nation is home to 129 active volcanoes, including 21 on Java alone. http://www.terradaily.com/2007/071019111035.q2z8s2mx.html

'Child of Krakatoa' Volcano Spews Ash

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — The Indonesian volcano known as the "Child of Krakatoa" spewed ash and smoke, prompting warnings of a possible eruption, a government volcanologist said Saturday.

Anak Krakatoa, which means "Child of Krakatoa," is the third volcano to become active in recent weeks in Indonesia, a sprawling nation of more than 17,000 islands. The country has about 150 volcanos along an arc of fault lines called the Pacific "Ring of Fire."

Volcanic Eruptions, Not Meteor, May Have Killed The Dinosaurs
ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2007) — A series of monumental volcanic eruptions in India may have killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, not a meteor impact in the Gulf of Mexico. The eruptions, which created the gigantic Deccan Traps lava beds of India, are now the prime suspect in the most famous and persistent paleontological murder mystery, say scientists who have conducted a slew of new investigations honing down eruption timing.

"It's the first time we can directly link the main phase of the Deccan Traps to the mass extinction," said Princeton University paleontologist Gerta Keller. The main phase of the Deccan eruptions spewed 80 percent of the lava which spread out for hundreds of miles. It is calculated to have released ten times more climate altering gases into the atmosphere than the nearly concurrent Chicxulub meteor impact, according to volcanologist Vincent Courtillot from the Physique du Globe de Paris.
