Experts link earthquakes to volcanic activity
Yuli Tri Suwarni, The Jakarta Post, Bandung
Experts say the tectonic quakes that recently struck Java and Sumatra might be responsible for triggering increased activities at several volcanoes on both islands.
Mount Soputan and Mount Karangetan, both in North Sulawesi, are on the same alert status as Anak Krakatau.
Meanwhile, Mount Kelud in East Java is on top-alert status, meaning an eruption is imminent.
There are nine volcanoes in the country on the third-highest alert status: Mount Kerinci in Jambi province; Mount Gamkonora on Halmahera Island in Maluku; Mount Dukono and Mount Ibu in North Maku; Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta; Mount Semeru in East Java; Mount Talang in Solok regency, West Sumatra; Mount Lokon in North Sulawesi; and Mount Papandayan in Garut, West Java.

Volcanoes throw up greenhouse gases that can rapidly affect climate all around the world. Such rapid climate change is what killed the dinosaurs, and not a meteor strike, suggests new research

Calaveras Fault hit with nearly 40 aftershocks after 5.6 quake
Brocher said the succession of aftershocks indicated that the fault was rupturing southward - a good sign - because most of the main quake's energy was being dissipated well away from the more dangerous Hayward Fault to the north. But there is always the possibility that the quake's abrupt release of stress inside the Calaveras Fault might have changed stresses that have long built up within the Hayward Fault, Brocher said. The temblor on the Calaveras, therefore, could have slightly increased the likelihood of a larger quake on the Hayward, by about 5 percent, he said.
The most recent official report by earthquake experts has placed the probability that a destructive quake will strike within the next 25 years on the Hayward Fault with a magnitude of 6.7 or greater at 27 percent. It also estimated the probability of a similar quake on the Calaveras at 11 percent in the same period.

SUGIHWARAS, Indonesia, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Indonesia's Mount Kelud volcano in East Java is in a critical phase and could erupt any time after being shaken by more than 1,000 tremors over the last two days, the country's top volcano expert said on Friday.

Indonesia's Mount Kelud volcano appears to have erupted, a top official has said, based on seismographic signals.
An estimated 350,000 people live within 10km (6 miles) of the volcano on the island of Java, about 90km (55 miles) south-west of the city of Surabaya.
There were no immediate reports of casualties and the area is shrouded in fog, blocking the view of the volcano.
A volcanologist said escalating tremors indicated the first eruption was at 1615 local time (0915 GMT).
The volcano last erupted in 1990, killing dozens of people.

The volcano in the heart of densely populated Java island was shrouded in fog and no visual confirmation of the apparent eruption was possible before night fell, said government seismologist Umar Rosadi.
As of early Saturday evening, detecting instruments close to the crater were still operating, indicating any eruption was so far small, he said. There were no reports of injuries or damage.
Earlier, Rosadi and another scientist said the seismic monitors on the slopes detected continuous tremors indicating an eruption had begun. They abandoned their posts.
In recent weeks, thousands of people have already been evacuated from villages closest to the crater, but an unknown number are believed to be still in the danger zone having dismissed warnings of a large eruption.
In 1990, Mt. Kelud killed more than 30 people and injured hundreds. In 1919, a powerful explosion that could be heard hundreds of miles away destroyed dozens of villages and killed at least 5,160.
The announcement of an apparent eruption triggered the evacuation of scores of people, including women hauling babies in slings, from the mountain in police trucks and motorbikes, witnesses said.
"I am afraid because the authorities say this eruption will be worse than the ones that have come before," said Marsini, a villager living just five kilometers from the crater. "They say there may be poisonous gas. I am leaving now,"
Scientists fear a buildup of magma under Kelud's crater lake could trigger a violent blast, sending a torrent of mud, ash and rock careering down the side of the 5,679-foot mountain.

Is this going to be a really big sign? That's the question.
