Scientists explain swarm of small quakes

In less than 24 hours, a swarm of 28 small earthquakes was recorded near Ridgely, Tenn., a city 109 miles southeast of Cape Girardeau.

Ridgely is at "a junction of two major faults in the New Madrid seismic zone," said Gary Patterson, geologist and spokesman for the Center for Earthquake Research and Information at the University of Memphis.

The Ridgely quakes occurred about four miles under the ground's surface.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the central Mississippi Valley is the most earthquake-prone region of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. Patterson said planning is better than panicking.

Scientists who follow the small Midwestern quakes linked to the New Madrid fault think in terms of a great quake as a magnitude 8 or greater, which would devastate multiple states.

"We have to plan for the worst-case scenarios, but it doesn't do a whole lot of good to scare the pubSignificant damage occurs at magnitudes 5 and up. A magnitude 6 quake would be felt over an eight-state area, he said.

But damage is impossible to predict, because it depends on how soils react to the underground vibrations and whether the surface is farmland or a city street. Older, taller structures fare the worst in earthquakes.

Good Grief!!! This sounds like it's gearing up for some major quake. It can be taken two ways - the little quakes let off the pressure thereby reducing the probability of a large quake OR they are like birth pangs and an indication of a big one! :ohno

:hat I'm new on this thread and have not read all of the pages that have accumulated over the past year since this amazing thread/topic began. So, please forgive my ignorance (in case this problem has already been discussed before by others), but can someone please tell me why everytime i click on " semissourian.com " the news stories always appear to me in HEBREW ??!!!! :scratch The main page on the website is in English, listing lots of various headlines and such, but whenever i click on a particular story, such as the one cited by "lighthouse" above in Reply # 261, it's all in Hebrew. I also wanted to read the story, entitled "Cape sinkhole total reaches 20 as five more appear" (shown on the right side of the screen of the website's main page) but when i clicked on that headline, that article appeared to me also in Hebrew. :idunno Has anyone else experienced this problem with this website ?????

Are you sure you have the name right above?? I tried it and got http://www.semissourian.com/ for Southeast Missourian:scratch Absolutely nothing Israeli about it.

:wave Thanks Caver !! I'm still gettin' the Hebrew fonts, but whenever i click on the Print icon then the article appears on screen in English. The only thing I can figure is because my hubby regularly does his translation work of the Old Testament books (he also uses Greek and Aramaic fonts for the N.T.) on this computer, perhaps some technoid fluke on the southeastern missourian website somehow triggers the Hebrew fonts to appear. Very weird. :thinking It has always happened with only this particular website - no other. Anyways, i finally was able to read the articles i wanted.

Now, as i often say in life...
Onward and UPward !!!!
:yeah:yeah:yeah

Unusual earthquake activity hits Oregon for first time in nearly 20 years

A series of small earthquakes registered off the coast of Oregon have today caused a degree of concern with scientists listening in to the sudden burst of seismic activity via underwater microphones.

Specifically, expert feedback related to the abrupt earthquake ‘swarm’ suggests that such swarming is generally accepted as a prelude to a volcanic eruption, which has seen the event deemed as unusual seeing as there are no volcanoes situated in the Oregon region.

The state has reportedly suffered more than 600 earthquakes over the course of the past ten days

Collected samples would enable scientists to check for sediment aggravated during the quake swarm, and also allow them to isolate whether magma is presently shifting along the Juan de Fuca Plate, a small piece of the Earth’s crust being progressively crushed by the movements of the Pacific Plate and North America

Is it just me or is this topic "pangin'" again? It seems like this thread went silent for several weeks and now it's getting busy again.

Just another article on the earthquake "swarm" -- this one gives a little more information.
