LONG VALLEY VOLCANIC CENTER VOLCANO (CAVW#1203-14-)
37.70°N 118.87°W, Summit Elevation 11122 ft (3390 m)
Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Aviation Color Code: GREEN
The realtime detection system located three earthquakes in the Long Valley caldera area since the last update at 9:26 AM on May 2. All were located in the Sierra Nevada south of the caldera. The largest was a magnitude M=3.0 earthquake at 6:25 AM (PDT) on the 3rd located 0.2 mile SW of Duck Lake (6 miles south of Mammoth Lakes). The other two had magnitudes less than M=2.0.
-----
The Long Valley Observatory (LVO) monitors and studies earthquakes, ground deformation, degassing, and other types of geologic unrest in and around the Long Valley Caldera. The 15 by 30 km Long Valley Caldera was formed during an eruption 760,000 years ago and is located 20 km south of Mono Lake along the east side of the Sierra Nevada in east-central California. There have been multiple smaller eruptions since the caldera-forming eruption with the most recent occurring 250 years ago in Mono Lake at the north end of Mono-Inyo Craters volcanic chain. LVO is one of the five USGS Volcano Observatories that monitor volcanoes within the United States for science and public safety.

Alaska Volcano Observatory
http://www.avo.alaska.edu/earthquakes/index.php
AVO uses its extensive seismic network to locate as many as 9000 earthquakes per year near volcanoes in Alaska
I see a large swarm of earthquakes at volcano _______. Does this mean it is going to erupt?
Every volcano has its own distinct behavior. Many have routine earthquake swarms that are unrelated to eruptions. These swarms may be caused by hydrothermal systems, regional stresses in Earth's crust, or even the slow collapse of the volcanic edifice. Most seismic swarms are not precursors to eruptions. To determine whether a seismic swarm might foretell an eruption, AVO combines seismic data with satellite imagery, deformation, gas measurements and the geologic history of the volcano. Putting all of these data streams together, the Observatory has an excellent track record of predicting impending eruptions.

Chile volcano forces 4,500 to flee
By Angus McDowall
Last Updated: 1:51AM BST 05/05/2008
More than 4,500 people had to flee their homes after a huge cloud of ash and lava was thrown into the sky by a long-dormant volcano in southern Chile
The Chaiten volcano, 800 miles south of the capital Santiago, had not erupted for more than 9,000 years and was considered dormant.
Consequently, geologists were not monitoring it as closely as others in the country.
About 70 volcanoes are active at some point during a typical year, but it is very rare for a supposedly dormant one to blow unexpectedly.

This is the major headline on St. Louis news today. Fenton is just a little west of St. Louis (maybe 15 miles west). This is a VERY strange place for an EQ. The epicenter was near an elementary school!
