View Full Version : Undersea 6.0 Earthquake Strikes Off Alaska's Aleutian Islands

ATTU, Alaska — Authorities say a strong undersea earthquake has struck in the North Pacific Ocean near the Western end of the Aleutian Islands, but no tsunami is expected.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.0 preliminary magnitude quake hit at Monday at 4:53 a.m. Alaskan, some 250 miles east-southeast of Attu.

This is a very active region, I was surprised when Fox news did a news alert on this one. It's off the Rat Islands which are not inhabited, which is a good thing.

Little Sitkin volcano is close there. It's not currently active. It's classified as a stratovolcano within a caldera volcano. Also Semisopochnoi is close by. It's an intracaldera volcano. Not currently erupting either.
My opinion? Both caldera-type volcanoes not currently active. But then neither was Chaiten (another caldera volcano) and we all know what has happened there.
