Download Pzip (http://www.download.com/PeaZip-Portable/3000-2250_4-10836532.html?tag=lst-0-8&cdlPid=10836531) (it's free)
Save your word document, onto desktop is easiest
Zip the word document with Pzip
attach the zipped word doc to the message and send away

If it's only words you are sending, and not a special formatted presentation like a spreadsheet, just open a new message and copy past the words into the email.

I sent the document to a friends email and when they opened it there were a bunch of "pars" all over it. When I sent it to myself it looked great!

Are you on AOL?
Make sure your mail program is set to send messages in rich text format

What is your mail program?
Try a free online mail account like Hotmail or gmail
