This past week i convinced my wife of the benefits of me riding a bicycle to work, (8 miles round trip). She agreed it was a good idea and said it would be my Fathersday/birthday present! We picked the bike up last night, (a Trek 7200), and I just rode to work today and really enjoyed the ride. I had to give myself an additional 20 minutes to get to work. I figure I can save myself a few fill-ups between now and winter, and eventually the bike will pay for itself. :yeah

Anyone else riding a bike to save money on gas?

I wish... I would if I could, but I live 37 miles from work (and that's taking the freeway -- back roads would be longer).

I was just thinking the same thing.
I thought if I have to leave the house an hour early to take the bus, I may as well just ride my bike.
How long do you think it would take to ride 11.7 miles?
I'm almost 50, but in fairly good shape. Will be in better shape by the end of the summer :aha

Now that nice weather is here, I've been riding mine quite a bit. I have a trailer that I pull my daughter in and we go shopping, to the bank, post office, everywhere and really enjoy it. The exercise doesn't do me any harm either. I figure I better get in shape. The way things are going, the bike may be my primary mode of transportation someday.

I wish I could but it would be 28 miles round trip down a busy highway. No way I could do that. But good for you!

Yep, bought a vintage 70's era Schwinn Hollywood ladies bike 2 summers ago....my husband put it in our shed as it needed some work. Well, it's now out and in excellent condition. I ride it to my Mom's...she's only about 3/4 of a mile from here but because she's got Parkinsons I go over every day to check on her. It will save me a bit in the long run by not running over in our Subaru Legacy, plus it's super good exercise. Now my hubby is looking for a bike. Gas here in Indy is $4 a gallon. Yesterday Diesel was $4.95 at one Speedway station. :panic
Blessings to all,

Yup! I just bought a Yamaha 650 Special that I'll hopefully be able to pick up sometime this weekend. 40-50mpg for my 60 mile (roundtrip) commute. Sure beats the 19-20mpg I'm getting currently in my minivan. Now if we can just have some decent global warming here in Minnesota for this upcoming winter....

I've been an avid bicyclist for years and love it.

Read up on safety, especially if there is a lot of traffic in your area.

I work out of the house, so no drive for me. But if I could I would ride to work everyday. I love biking, but I would need a shower when I got to work!

When I first started riding I was averaging about 12-15 miles per hour, but after a few months 17-20 miles per hour was common. But that was on a road bike without traffic.

There will probably be a lot more purchases of push bikes and motorbikes. I have both, but it is already getting way too hot here in Houston to be riding. Not so bad on the motorbike as the wind cools you down, it's just stopping at lights etc. I have to wear protection on the motorbike as I have had a few spills over the years (none my fault!) and don't want any more scars. I'll have to find something protective but very light weight.

My Triumph gets about 45mpg, compared to my Magnum's 19mpg. DH's Pathfinder is paid for and not used very often and we're considering selling the Magnum... if we can get a buyer!

School is within walking distance, work for me is 7 miles and DH works from home. We're cutting out cellphone media packages, cutting the cable TV lineup, playing the grocery game, trying to not use the ac and joking about 'coon stew - haha - we just trapped one in our attic last night.

God, Jehovah Jireh, is faithful and is our provider. We're doing what we can and resting in Him :)
