i have a 6 yr old grandson. i was going to enroll him in an awanas program until i read a thread about them becoming more into the whole emergent church thing.:tsk now i don't know of any other options. alot if churches in my area just don't offer anything for kids this age. some have royal ambassadors but from previous expierence with my son, i am not too keen on that so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. i am going to be teaching him at home this summer and if i can't find anything suitable for him in the fall, i will continue but i did want him to have an opportunity to be with other children his age and to forge some christian friendships. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.:)

First of all, I'm not aware of AWANA and the emergent church connection and if there is one then certainly you should beware. However, I do know that AWANA is based on Bible Memorization and Bible Doctrine. Here is their Doctrinal Statement (http://www.awana.org/about/default.aspx?id=19)
Each child learns at their own pace, but can learn up to 60? scriptures per year. This can start at the pre-school age and continue through High School. What this means is that your grandchild could learn hundreds of verses if they stayed with the program. In addition, the program builds on itself. It always starts with scriptures that will then build on each other. It offers rewards and reviews.
I don't know of any other programs that are as thorough but there are some that are good. Southern Baptist's offer TeamKid and Bible Drill programs which also offer scriptural memorization and Bible skills. I'm sure there are others that I'm not familiar with.
Hope this helped. :hat

In case it takes too long to find a church Bible study for the kids, begin at home. Find good online lesson plans / resources, and check the "Christian" book stores for lesson plans.
I saw quite a few devotional books for youngsters in my church's book store. It only takes a few minutes a day to go over each lesson.

I was an awana. I went to a christian school for awhile during my middle school years, i believe it was. Though I can not comment on their connection to the emergent church thing, I can say a little about what they do, which is basically memorize bible verses. They were using KJV at the time, can't comment on if they are still using that version. Once you get so many verses done you get prizes or patches. Then their are christian based games and talk about being a christian and what it means and then after we were done going through our awana books we all got on a bus and went to a gymnasium somewhere and played basketball or dodgeball etc. Good for socializing with other christian children and if you had the time you could probably volunteer and meet other parents. If you are concerned, you should ask for a beginners booklet or just attend a meeting. Oh and I forgot, I believe that if you finished your whole book in a certain time period they also had/have summer camps available, but I might be remembering wrong. I thought being an awana was fun and it was a pretty good mix of boy and girls.
