Subway, the sandwich restaurant, wants to hear your child's story – unless he or she is homeschooled.
The national chain's "Every Sandwich Tells a Story Contest" offers prizes and a chance to be published on the Subway website and in Scholastic's "Parent & Child" magazine but specifically excludes homeschoolers:
More at above link.
They've said they changed their rules for 'next time'. But only after they got slammed by the homeschooling communities. If this is a repeat of the story, then just disregard. It is a few days old, but thought you all might want to choose whether to eat at Subway or not.

On their Customer Service page:
Every Sandwich Tells a Story Contest
We at SUBWAY restaurants place a high value on education, regardless of the setting, and have initiated a number of programs and promotions aimed at educating our youth in the areas of health and fitness.
We sincerely apologize to anyone who feels excluded by our current essay contest. Our intention was to provide an opportunity for traditional schools, many of which we know have trouble affording athletic equipment, to win equipment. Parents who home school their children make a tremendous commitment which we greatly respect, and can provide a terrific education. Our intent was certainly not to exclude home schooled children from the opportunity to win prizes and benefit from better access to fitness equipment.
To address the inadvertent limitation of our current contest and provide an opportunity for even more kids to improve their fitness, we will soon create an additional contest in which home schooled students will be encouraged to participate. When the kids win, everyone wins!

I got an email notice that they've apologized and in the future will not exclude homeschoolers. But it didn't say anything about them including homeschoolers in this campaign. :tsk

Exactly. Their "apology" is too little, too late, in my opinion.

I'm a little perplexed by this whole thing.
The amount of money being given away was $5000, is that right? Perhaps Subway was excluding homeschoolers, because most homeschoolers work on an individual basis, not in group settings unless you belong to a co-op, so I can see why they may excluded them. They wanted the money to go to a collective group to meet the needs of many children instead of just one or two. Perhaps what they could have done, if they had thought about, was to include homeschool groups or co-ops of 200 or more students, or something like that. IMO, I don't think it would be fair for an individual homeschooler to enter the contest and then win, and that one homeschooler reaps the benefits of the prize money that was actually intended to go to a larger group of kids and their school.
I believe Subway, when they said they didn't mean to discriminate; they were trying to keep the prize available for a larger school and not one individual, but like I said, if they had thought to research it a little they could have extended the offer to homeschool groups or co-ops.

I agree with New World Order. It was a large sum of money that one homeschooling family probably wouldn't spend on sports equipment. Im sure it wasn't an intentional slight against homeschoolers.
I hope I say this right, but we have to be careful about getting upset when not included in every little thing. We chose to be "unconventional" and not involved in the mainstream on our kids schooling and as a result, we will not be included in everything out there. I would hate to see the homeschooling community become like the Homosexual community, demanding the same as everyone else, just because we chose to be different. But that's just my 2 cents worth, take it as you will. :)
