Hi, guys! I wanted to share this with you...

A while back, my two year old started getting a red rash with white little bumps on his tushie area. i remembered seeing a commercial on tv about babies having yeast infections and how you can get your doctor to prescribe a special cream for them. i wanted to call the doctor, but

moms, you know the drill!
call the doctor
make an appointment
take baby to appointment
baby is cranky because he's missed his nap (due to appointment) AND his tushie feels bad
sit in waiting room
sit in exam room
baby is fussy because you probably ran out of cookies
doctor looks at tushie (baby DOES NOT LIKE THAT)
prescribes cream stuff
go to pharmacy
WAIT.
finally, get cream stuff, and get home, and treat that tushie.

....sheesh! who has that kind of time??:lol2

so, i called my hubby. he's a hospital corpsman in the Navy (training to be an IDC now). he's got a photographic memory, so he's like a walking textbook! he told me to let him have a look at it when he got home.

later that evening, he took a look, and went to the shoe closet. he came back with a yellow cannister of Desenex foot powder.

Whoa! i said. you're not putting foot powder on my baby's bottom!? :scratch

then he explained that a yeast infection is called different things depending on where it is on the body. the same medicine cures it no matter where it is. our desenex has 2% miconazole nitrate, which is an antifungal. a couple shakes of it on the baby's bottom, and a few hours later, the rash was gone!

i have been using this method for awhile. only use it when the rash appears, and it doesn't take much. goes without saying, but be vigiliant in keeping that area clean and dry.

next time i saw that commercial, i paid special attention, and noticed that the cream they show has the exact same active ingredient, in the exact same concentration (2%). i had to give hubby a big kiss and a hug for saving me so much time and hassle....and i wanted to pass it along to all of you. :hug

:preach:preach***DISCLAIMERr*** of course, i'm not a doctor! if your baby has other symptoms besides the rash (like a fever, or nausea, for example) go ahead and take him/her to the doctor. also, if this rash happens alot, a checkup may be a good idea. my baby gets this only once in a while.

Blessings to all of you other mommies out there! :hat

There is a school of thought that claims that yeast infections that come out anywhere on the body are due to an overgrowth of yeast in the gut. This is usually brought on because of antibiotic use. The way to treat it is to take a good refrigerated acidophilus for 3 months. http://www.diannecraft.com has several articles on this. In her CD The Biology of Behavior she gets into how this affects behavior and learning problems and also what to do about it. :thumb

that's very interesting, because my little guy has recently started taking an antibiotic for a foot wound. he loves yogurt. do you think any kind would be helpful as long as it as the acidophilus in it?

It needs to say "live cultures" or "active cultures" on the label somewhere.

Apparently antibiotics not only kill the infection that your treating but they kill off this good bacteria in your gut as well. This results in an overgrowth of yeast which inhibits the production of seratonin and can cause health problems like thrush, diaper rash, athletes foot ect. ect. ect. This can cause alot of behavior and learning problems down the road as well. It actually made me :rant when I first learned about it because I feel that if this is true then doctors should be prescribing a course of acidophilus after every antibiotic treatment. :idunno

What Lisaann said!

Plain jane yoghurt ALL Around for baby.. And it works to apply it to the rashed out area..
Works with thrush and vag. yeast infections!

I'd also, if you're BF'ing -- back off on your yeast and sugar intake. ;)

Thanks, IDCwife! :thumb

Actually, it's funny you guys are talking about yogurt...my DS is lactose intolerant, so if he has more than half a Yobaby per day, he gets diarrhea...which causes a diaper rash! :doh

We've put acidophilus in my daughter's bottle since she was two weeks. She's ten months now and still gto one of those rashes under her neck when she was about 7 months. She's a huge drooler and some of the bibs we were using had chafed her and since she's so chunky not a lot of air was getting in there.

Someone told us to use antifungal cream mixed with Boudreauxs butt paste. It worked great!

I had that same problem with my dd because she was pretty chubby. :lol2 I think air can't get in those sweet nooks and crannies and they get raw.

Make sure you are using a refrigerated acidophilus. The kind you buy off of the shelf is very very weak, almost worthless, because the bacteria will die in the heat. I've heard that even the refrigerated kind can be rendered worthless if they are left out in the warmth in transit. You need to ask the company that you order from if they are transported chilled or not. It really will affect how well it works.

Yup, we do use the regrigerated acidophilus. It seems to be working...Bridget has only been sick once and even then it wasn't bad at all. We also put omega 3 oil in her bottles as well.
