I just got an email today from Lexis/Nexis saying all cell phone numbers will be released to telemarketers tomorrow. You will be charged for all calls they make to your number. Take a moment to call 1-888-382-1222 or go to DONOTCALL.GOV to register your number. You have to call from the number you're registering. It's easy, and well worth the 60 seconds it takes.

Likely a reincarnation of the e-mail hoax that has been circulating for some time.

According to truthorfiction.com, this is false. http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/c/celldirectory.htm

This is an old e-mail that just keeps making its way around the internet and gets updated with dates. Any phone, cell or land, can be placed for free on the do not call registry... https://www.donotcall.gov/register/reg.aspx

You don't need to pay for a call from your cell phone at all.

Better safe than sorry. I like to choose who I give my money to.

We all like to choose who we give our money to. However, we must do our due diligence and not be irresponsible. Please understand that I say this in kindness...before you post a negative e-mail you really should check it out. It's not that hard to do. There are several reputable sites that are free to use. The five minutes it takes to run a check is well worth it. I use the two I listed above; http://www.truthorfiction.com and http://www.snopes.com . I have also googled subject lines and come up with reputable sources to prove or disprove an e-rumor.

We have all sent out e-mails without checking them; especially if they seem to be so believable. But I learned years ago when my credibility started to suffer from doing that to check things out first.

Boy, I sure never would have thought of my post as "negative." I was only trying to be helpful, but I must have landed in the twilight zone. Sorry I offended you.

While this email may be false, telemarketers can cost you money in other ways.

They can LEGALLY send you text message solicitations to your cell phone and you have to pay for them, unless you pay extra for an unlimited text messaging from your cell phone company. Text messaging is NOT covered under the Do Not Call Registry.

Also, it does burn your cell phone minutes if a telemarketer calls you.

I had to change my cell number once because a porn/phone sex telemarketer kept calling me trying to get me to pay for phone sex and was told there was nothing else I could legally do about it. I was not very happy about it.

I was saying that the e-mail was negative. You were trying to be helpful and I saw that which is why I prefaced what I said with "Please understand that I say this in kindness" and I provided links that I have found to be reliable so that you could check things in the future. I am sorry if I seemed to be harsh. It was not my intention.

I found your post to be very helpful. I registered my home number and all 3 cell numbers my family uses as well. Thanks for the info!
