One theory for animal deaths is the expulsion of Hydrogen Sulfide gas from the vents in the caldara. In the lungs, it can react with water to form sulfuric acid which would kill the animal. Humans might escape the gas if they are aware of the sulpher smell and can move fast enough and far enough away from the vent to get to fresh air. I'm not sure that animals would understand the danger indicated by the smell.
