Pickup truck suspected in rash of fuel heists
May 30, 2008 04:30 AM

Police say diesel fuel stolen from a Pennsylvania gas bar has been linked to a pickup-truck trailer fitted with a trap door and vacuum hose.
The truck belongs to the owner of a small asphalt and trucking company just across the Ohio border, police said.
No one has been charged.
"I've never seen anything like this," said Hermitage deputy police chief Edward Holiga.
The trailer had a straw wall masking a wooden partition. The partition hid a siphoning mechanism and a 5-metre-long propane tank.
Hermitage police hope to link the truck to other local thefts. A month ago a food mart had $4,500 (U.S.) worth of diesel fuel stolen from its underground tanks. Police in Ohio are looking into a theft there, too.
A tip led police to an Ohio site where they found the truck, storage tanks and 500 gallons of fuel.

Average price of U.S. diesel fuel hit a record $4.787 yesterday.

I'm wondering how we can protect our cars. In the 1970s and 1980s a locking gas cap was all that we needed. Now, it looks like they aren't even bothering to try to get the cap off, they're just drilling holes in the tank and draining it. :ohno

I was listening to the news this morning and for the 3rd or 4th time, the news highlighted how people are using their horses instead of their cars for transportation. Today was about 2 students who rode their horses to school.

I've often thought about the bible talking about horses as transportation in the end times and thought it was probably allegorical, but now I'm wondering if, indeed, we will by necessity go back to riding horses as a primary mode of transportation.

Any thoughts?

buying feed may be a problem. Horses are far more reliable even if they are a bit slower.

No matter what we come up with to make it difficult for thieves to steal our gas from our vehicles, someone out there will always be smart enough to figure a way around it just like they do with internet hacking.
