Our electric company fpl says that they are going to have to do a surcharge of 16-20%....so if my energy bill is $230 a month...then that would be only $11 ? They were talking to the small business on the news...and they were saying that it is really going to hurt...one many pays 3000 and he said 200 more dollars would hurt a lot....I could see it hurting the small businesses because they have huge payments...but for me only 11? thats not so bad...did I do the math correctly? thanks@

Sorry, but 16-20% of $230 is $36-46.
And to me, that would hurt pretty much everyone every month! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
For the math, look at it this way. 10% of $230 is $23. So for 20% (the double of 10%), just double the amount of $23, which would then be $46.
Make sense? If I'm wrong, please someone correct me.

It would really hurt my family. Where I am, power is either from nuclear plants or Niagara generators. I haven't heard of any rate increases here but I imagine if they can get an increase they will go for it. We had two months in a row this year where just our natural gas bill (heating and cooking) was almost $800. Electric was close to $200 for those months. We keep the house at 68 during the day and 62 at night. Upstairs is kept at 62 24/7. We have 18 inch thick stone walls and storms and/or plastic on all windows. Our house was built in 1850 when they took advantage of overhangs for summer cooling and lots of south facing windows for solar warmth in winter. We have a high-efficiency boiler for radiator heat and a high-efficiency hot water heater. We even supplement heat with a wood stove and pellet stove that we keep going unless they need cleaning. We don't even put up a lot of Christmas lights because we can't absorb the cost of the bill increase. We have the flourescent bulbs in all our lights and lamps. There's not a lot more that we can do to conserve resources. OUCH!!!
