Yes and it can be very painful and you can have it recur. It manifests in people who've already had chicken pox, but this outbreak will appear over nerves of your body. It can be brought on by stress. I am surprised a 12 year old has been diagnosed, I've only heard of it in adults.

We spent the whole evening in the doctors office (mainly waiting on him to come in). He took one look and said yes that it is definitely shingles. He started her on some med and gave DS8 a booster chicken pox shot (boy was he happy= NOT! He didn't understand why she was sick and he got the shot.) Anyway, These wrap around the right part of her body from her belly buttom to the small of her back. She had the chicken pox when she was about 18 months old DS3 at the time gave them to her. I just wander how often they can/will reoccur and what makes them come back. She doesn't seem to be in any pain for now just miserable because he said "NO swimming until you're better." Oh she is complaining of a headache which is really abnormal for her so maybe that is a symptom.

We just went through that 2 months ago with DS who is 9, I was so shocked when our Dr. said what it was. I had thought it was an adult only thing too.
He didn't complain too much, but then again he never complains so I don't know how much pain he was really in. Our Dr. said that children don't experience the pain to the same degree as adults (PTL!!). His was on the back of the neck to shoulder area. I think it was harder on me than him!

on my gardening board, the other members were talking about shingles and vaccines for them, it was odd to see a thread about it here !
Hope your DD feels better soon! :hug

Shingles is a common disease of the elderly, but when my son was 16 he had a small spot. I have known of other kids that had them as well. For my son, he had recently had an emergency appendectomy, which compromised his immune system. It's very painful. His wasn't long in duration. I hope you daughter responds quickly to anti viral drugs and is back on her feet soon. Also, it can only cause the chicken pox in people who have not had the pox. You cannot transmit shingles themselves. My mother in law recently had a terrible time with them. She has been unable to see her first great grandchild who is 7months old now.

I had them when I was 4. (Had chicken pox at 6 months so I couldn't get them again.) Mine went all the way around my waist from one side of the belly button to the other. It scared my mom because there is an old wives tale that the person will die when that happens. Obviously, the tale is wrong cause I'm still around 45 years later. :aha
Mine were big purple blisters. They itch and they hurt. That's about all I remember. The doctor did tell mom that it was because I'd already had chicken pox that I got the shingles and it's because the virus doesn't really die off, it hibernates in the spinal column. When it activates, it travels out to the nerve endings to blister.
My grandmother had them when she was 75. They lasted for months with her. They itched and they hurt and she was downright miserable.
If they catch it with the first 48 hours, I have been told that there are antiviral drugs that can decrease the amount of time for the symptoms to go away.
I'm sorry she has these. :hug

Listerine to the rescue! I have chronic shingles. You can google *Listerine shingles* and get more info on it, but I topically apply Listerine to the outbreaks and it gives relief to the nearly maddening itching and pain. :)

I am so sorry that your daughter has shingles. :hug My dad just had them and he was miserable and said they hurt and he couldn't be around my kids. Some told him to put Vitamin E on them to help with the itching. He never tried it so not sure if it works.

I had an outbread about 3 1/2 years ago when I had mono. They are all in the same family. They can repeat their outbreaks during stress to a person if under a lot of pressure or if they become very ill or as some say and accident and the recovery process.
They are not fun! And if my dr. had not given me that valtrex (I think that is the correct name) I think that my ribs would have cracked from all of the pain I had.
I hope your child gets well soon!
