I have a very liberal atheist friend, who I e-mail with back and forth.
Her latest thing is Conservative Christian Republican in the government do not care for the poor, but rather rich corporations.
So I get an e-mailfrom her today saying:
" I was not talking about individuals, and what they give in the form of charity, I was talking about big policies put through by Republican politicians that are not in the best interests of the poor and or minorities;
for instance below is an example of how the Republicans are trying to dismantle Section 8 housing.
That is housing for low income people (many of whom are minorities), yes, its a kind of 'welfare' it lets poor people live in places and pay a low amount per month (a certain percentage of their income/SSI/SS I think its based on a sliding scale), -while the government picks up the rest of the tab.
How can this be construed as pro-poor behaviour on the part of the Bush administration? "
Any thoughts on this? I haven't replied yet, as I really am not sure about this.

Whether or not Republicans are trying to dismantle Section 8 housing, I have no clue to its truth. But to answer her question? That I understand. When people had to work to survive at the beginning of this country, that is exactly what they did if they could at all. But human nature being what it is and with our sinful natures, if you give someone to something that they really didn't earn, and they aren't taught the value of work and with God being thrown out of everything who also told us to work, then its simple to understand how generations grow to expect to be helped. It has a snowball affect, the more you give the more that is expected. So many see providing low costs housing as actually perpetuating or increasing people to not work and to be "poor".
Our society and govt and economy has gotten so skued and offtrack that its not just one entity involved causing this but several. But the bottom line is "sin" and "self first". Sure, some people are poor. Jesus said that we would always have the poor with us. But some people are poor because of bad choices or bad life circumstances beyond their control and others are poor because they dont want to work, they want what they want when they want, they are apathetic, they are lazy, and on and on it goes. So in todays society, if something is "free" or "cheap", then that is what the majority of Americans go for. Its costs them less.
In the ideal world, everyone belongs to the church and we all help each other out as needed knowing it all belongs to the Lord anyways. That is how it was meant to be according to God's word.....But we "know" our society is probably further away from the Lord than it has ever been.
And, oh yea, the blame thing has been going on for years... she's blaming the Republican Christians.... but is she doing anything in her life to actually help an individual that truly needs help? And I"m not talking "wants".. but true needs.....
Just my 2 cents worth.... I'm so ready to go home.. :candle

Well, I guess the alternative will be to just put them out on the street? The Lord said that we will always have the poor, so when people say this I just don't know why they feel that those more fortunate in helping in providing shelter for the poor is a bad thing because, not only is it the humane thing to do but it prevents people from being homeless and living on the streets, which no town wants to have.
Remember when Jesus had nothing and someone clothed and fed Him and He was grateful and said that whoever does that for the least of men, they also do it for Him. I think that was a message for us.

We should be providing jobs for these people so they can earn a living, rather than giving them a free ride. There are a bunch of Section 8 homes in my neighborhood, and what do the residents do? Sit home and get high and drunk all day and blast their nasty music. Their kids wander all over the place. These people seem to feel that the government owes them something.:soapbox

Thank you all for you thoughts. I think she is trying to say Conservatives/Christians, Republicans are not compassionate, they are greedy, and just help big business ( the ole' boys groups).
But her point is not the indivual but those in government.
So liberals who don't believe in God are really caring ,
and Christians Republicans don't follow the golden rule of do unto others.
I sent links showing Christians, conservative/republican do actually give more to the poor.
But her point is: when it comes to government where supposedly Republicans could do more and actually help getting mother with little children off the street, by section 8 housing, instead are trying to dismatle it.
She has her won think tank of college liberal anti-God, pro-abortion people, that she consults with on every issue she brings up to me. So I thought just for once, I would get "my" think tank of just as smart Christians. LOL

You did what non believers often do.. take out one or two lines out of context and make Christians sound awful. Read the entire post carefully. Read how it is biblically supposed to be done.. read "why" the way the world does it doesn't work.... and ask the Lord to open your eyes if you truly do not understand.... I never said ONE WORD about putting poor people out on the street... I addressed the problem with government just handing out stuff repeatedly to the public with no calling for accountability. Sin is a deep part of the problem.... and until the friend gets that part of the picture, they will never get the rest of it on any topic.....
We ARE to take care of the less fortunate ... That means us individually as believers.... you see someone in need, you have the means, then you or I should help them as the Holy Spirit leads...... but regardless if whether we like it or not, continual handouts to people without the Lord in their lives and not providing any other kind of help to get them out of their situation perpetuates increased selfishnessand "I deserve this" thought patterns... when the truth is.. none of us as sinners are getting what we truly deserve during our time on this planet... and that is a hard cold fact.... God wants us to have wisdom too.. His wisdom and not our own...:candle
