... has made me wonder.

I too have planted a *bit* of a garden this year - for the first time. I've heard lots of people on this board say they planted for the first time or stepped it up.

I am doing mostly container gardening - an assortment of herbs, strawberries, tomatoes, pumpkins (um, NOT in containers, LOL), and I think I'm going to put in lettuce and potatoes for late harvest.

Interestingly enough, I usually kill whatever plant life I touch!! Who knows if I will do any better this year, but it's making me wonder WHY I have suddenly gotten into gardening when I usually don't bother and have zero interest.

With others doing the same... is it possible we're being somehow prompted?? :idunno Maybe for a change in our economy or food shortages to come? Or are we just the type of people who like to be prepared for everything?

Food (pun intended) for thought... :)

Yes, I think the Holy Spirit is leading us to be prepared for some rough days ahead.

I'm a girly-girl. I loath yard work, being dirty, and sweaty.:( In all my 37 years you would have never found me out in the hot sun doing yard work. I left that to my very capable hubby. But this year I felt led to do a garden. So....... in obediance to the call, my girly behind is out in the yard growing tomato plants, green beans, strawberries and other veggies. I hoe the weeds in between the bean rows and water the garden every other night if it doesn't rain. :twitch

The call to prepare has been loud, clear, and urgent.
Too many of us here have heard the call to store and grow food for it not to be from our Lord trying to prepare us and take care of us.

Just my two pennies.:)

I agree. We are fortunate to be able to grow our own food. I am now in the process of only buying heirloom and organic seed. I do not want anyone possessing the ability to prevent me from producing my own food.

This is a very Great idea !!!:thumb A client gave me an envolope last month and inside it was 15 unopened packs of organic seeds !!! I was a tad perpelexed since I had never spoke to her about gardening and she does not garden, She just walked up and handed me this package full of seeds!!! I Thanked her and the Lord !! My garden spot should be ready by next spring since I am working on it all this season to get it ready for planting, I need a fence though !! Waiting for the $ to buy the supplies for it !!! I can hardly wait !!!!! But my fruit trees are all doing very well, My chicks are growing like weeds and I have a rooster .... I heard him trying to crow and making the horrible noises !! Hope he gets better at it soon :aha

My mother raised chickens for about a decade, and believe me, they're either born with it or they ain't.

I'm growing tomatoes myself. I've got four plants, three of which are doing extremely well and have blossoms already (planted in May). They're in their own pots. Next year I plan on doing much more. I'd like to grow onions and some types of peppers, that way I might be able to make my own Rotel-type sauce.

I'd love to raise chickens eventually, but I know from experience that if you're going to eat them it takes careful timing, otherwise the meat is... well, not very good. Either way, I love eggs, so it's win-win.

I'm right there with you. In addition to the fact that I just don't have any form of a green thumb, there are a dozen different things I'd rather be doing than getting sweaty, dirty, and grimy. :)

I agree that too many of us are hearing the call for it to be a coincidence. At any rate I can't imagine how it's a bad thing to be prepared.

Gardening is just in my blood. My Grandparents always had a garden and while my Dad didn't always have one, the bug was planted early in me to always have one. Now my Dad has a huge garden and I have a nice one as well. He wants to double the size of his this fall and that does shock me. Maybe that is God talking to him. I can't get mine any bigger, but I did get chickens!

I am also an avid gardener although I mostly have flowers. I now lean toward the drought resistant perennials that will make it in our climate which happens to be zone 7. I did plant one tomato plant and three peppers. Mainly for our 3 year old to watch them grow. We also have three blueberry bushes and one fairly new peach tree. The blueberries are loaded and close to being ready for consumption.
