Also a generator and manual water purifier.
Does anyone have any good brands to recommend?
I'm going to be doing the freezing and storage of flour and staples, like so many of my sisters here in RR.
Also, I've found a few websites to help, but does anyone know of a good website that may be Christian or have an end times philosophy, that may give good survival tips?
I have sooo much to learn, and definitely feel that if we're not raptured soon, that we'd better be savy about homesteading and other basic survival skills just by the way our economy is going.

My Mom just bought a whirlpool upright freezer. Chest freezers are cheaper, though.

Thanx lyn! I think I'm going to go 'cheap' (money is tight) and go with a chest freezer. Does Home Depot have the best prices? Or is there another outlet y'all recommend?

She bought hers at Home Depot, but it may depend on your area for the cheapest ones.
Also, right after she bought hers, I found some on craigslist!! Check that out- they were pretty cheap!

Adoration, if you go to www.craigslist.org and click on your state, then after that, click on a city near where you live. Go to the household section under 'For Sale', and at the top of the page is a SEARCH bar. Just type in freezer, and anything for sale will come up. It's like an 'online garage sale' and is great! Our family has found some wonderful buys this way (a couple of freezers, too).
Once you shop on craig's list, you will go there again for anything you need, because it has such good buys offered by people who live nearby.

I got mine at Sears, around 2 months ago. I can already see a difference in my electric bill (we replaced a really old full size fridge in the garage with the chest freezer).

Mine was around $220, and it is a Kenmore brand. So far, it's great! You will want to look for one that is EASY to defrost, as very few are frostless.

Happy shopping!

Also check at Costco or Sam's. I have purchased some really good big ticket items from Costco at wonderful savings. Look for a chest freezer that has a bottom drain that you can attach a hose to so you can just run that hose out the door and let drain outside when defrosting it. Which you should do probably once a year. I think its best to can as much stuff as you possibly can (no pun intended) because if the power goes out you lose freezer stuff it stays out for too long and even with a generator - what happens if gas runs out?
So I would do both with leaning more toward canning.

Before they were made illegal, there used to be gas fridges.

Maybe you can find an old one and hook it up to bottled gas.

That might be even more certain in emergencies than an electric one with a generator.

I heard of such fridges being used here as recently as ten years ago.

I have an upright Fridgidaire from Sears. I bought it on sale for under 300.00. Keep watching those sale papers. I love an upright.

Concerning water filters - we have been using a Berkey Light (without the lights) for a couple of years now. It was $209 when we got it. It's easy to clean, and the water tastes great. You are supposed to be able to dump creek water or whatever in it, and come out 99.99% pure. Haven't had to try that yet, but it's probably coming! Here's a link to a site that I like alot - they are Christians (at least, from what it looks like):
