Notice the mother took her son to the police department first? It's getting esasier and easier to have your children taken away. At the beginning of the summer it is very easy to misjudge how long you can be outside in the sun.

:thinking Pretty poor of him though. It is commonsence and as adults our responsability to make sure ur child is protected especially that extreme sunburn. I can understand the mothers distress.
But to go to the police :idunno

The child suffered second & third degree burns, had he been in childcare & got the same burns. They would charge the workers with abuse, even in Missouri where I'm from, when DH & I, worked with children in a group home we were warned that if a child got this kind of sunburn we would be charged with child abuse. I don't understand why the mother didn't take him to the hospital? They would have reported it to the authorities, but the poor baby was already in pain & to go to the police & not the hospital. They should see if they can charge her with something IMHO.

I tend to believe this, cus she should have taken the child to the hospital. I see a lot of young divorced folks with kids using them as pawns, often "setting the other partner up". It makes me sick how these poor children have to suffer. Yes, dad was negligent, but I'm thinking about growing up and my parents never put sunscreen on us and we only went to the hospital when it was a major bleeding all over the place issue, but they would make us come inside for no apparent reason (maybe so we wouldn't burn up). I don't know either, but the way these folks operate just gets my goat!

^Maybe she feared being arrested for neglect herself? And that's why she went to the police first?

I live near where this happened, and they've shown the pictures on the news. The child is blistered.

From the article:
Golf ball-sized blisters covered a Berea, Ky., toddler's shoulders when his mother retrieved the boy from his father's home Sunday, and police have charged his father with first-degree criminal abuse.
Yeah that is more than just a sunburn. :( BUT the mother should have taken the child to the doctor, and the doctor could have contacted police on her behalf. Since her first instinct was the police dept, I think she was getting back at him for reasons unrelated to the sunburn, or they have a nasty custody dispute going on. Poor baby.

Maybe, but not necessarily. Maybe it was one of those straws that broke the camels back and she wants to protect her child.
