Hi! SO many of you here are experienced home schooling families. I need some info for my daughter and really don't know the fastest way to get the info because she needs to make a decision very soon.

My daughter is a church music secretary in Cincinnati and has been asked by a home school co-op to teach a high school level chemistry course. The curriculum has been selected (Apologia), the semester runs 14 weeks, class time would be 1 to 1.5 hours one day a week ... mostly lecture and lab work. She figures she would need 4-5 hours outside of class for prep, grading, etc.

They have asked her to set her fee.

While she plans to home school she does not have children yet so is not very familiar with the whole home school environment and really has no idea what a fair and reasonable fee would be.

We are wondering if any of you could share info and/or experiences with this type of arrangement.

Most gratefully ... for info or input,
yarnball

That's a bit hard to answer. Our co-op sets up the fees. There is an annual registration fee per family of about $35.00, and then the class fees. Our co-op charges $60 per semester per class for enrichment classes and elementary core classes, and it's $120 per semester per class for highschool level core classes like science, math and history, and then there are supply fees which run about $12 to $15 per student. Those fees do not include the text books, that's extra and bought by the student. My daughter will be taking 3 core classes of $120 each, which will be $360 for the first semester, then it will be another $360 the second semester. It doesn't have to be paid all at once, it can be made in payments. She needs to keep affordable since it is a co-op class, and the kids who take her class will more than likely be taking other classes through the co-op as well. She could also ask the other teachers and see what they are charging.

I forgot to add that the core classes meet twice a week for 1 hour, so 2 hours a week.

The co-op we belonged to paid the teachers $20 an hour, that was last year. The money was divided among all the children/teens attending the class, then of course any equipment/supplies where also included with that fee. We always paid upfront so we knew how much the classes would cost.

Don't know how that helps, and she can do it anyway she wants of course, but that is the way they did it.

CircleSlide, do you mean

$20 per classroom hour, e.g., $20 per week?

or per hour per student, e.g., x5 students would be $100 per week?

or $20 per the 4-5 hours for her total time of class plus prep time?

Thank you for your input!
