Why is this not surprising? Everyone's disposable income is going into their gas tanks.

Wow, Home Depot? I have FOUR Home Depot stores within a range of 15 minutes drive. TWO of them are in my city and one was just built about 5 minutes away. One of the ones in my city is only a year or two old and I was shocked that they didn't close the other one. And there are two Lowe's stores in the area. :|

I bet Pier 1 will be next -- they've closed two big stores in our metropolitan area.

And, I'm SO sad that we're losing our Kirkland's! That was a great place to buy really cute -- yet cheap -- home decorations.

Given that a quickly growing number of our population can no longer afford basic necessities and travel to and from work.... it is no wonder that many stores are going out of business. Store closings will probably pick up speed rapidly if something doesn't happen soon to lower energy prices.

Oh absolutely! Dominoes are falling. All those job losses are nothing compared to the supporting job losses...

I can't figure out how my town of 7000 can support a WalMart, Meijer, Menards, Tractor Supply, Rural King, Aldi, AND a Scotts (Kroger) and yet still build a brand new Kohls from the ground up- as is happening now. There also is a renovation of an old manufacturing building into a strip mall-type center...where tenants will come from, I have no idea.

I'm just wondering if it would be possible to pin this thread. I have also read
articles about the stores closings and wished there were a running, updated list. Some of you know that I opened my own little jewelry store in the fall of
2000....business was slowing down to a crawl and the Lord was leading us to
close with money in the bank and no debt whatsoever. When we had our going out of business sale we made a profit--didn't just break even. This was the hardest thing I have ever had to do, other than give birth to my children.
Since I closed, the small town I had my business in has had other downtown
stores close as well....a knick knack store and last week a lady's dress shop.
There have been other things that have closed up too. I'm pretty sure there will be more closings as we get into the fall of this year and after Christmas because the business just won't be there. People are tapped out. Businesses are really hurting....and so rather than take out any loans at any given time and suffer through it and incur debt, we decided to get out and still make money while
there were still people spending it. My brother works for a large, privately owned jewelry store....big sales every year...lots of profit. That business owner had to try to auction off millions of merch this spring and missed the boat...he barely made any sales and is in the hole because he owes vendors, the bank and advertisers. We're just beginning to see the tip of the iceberg
with this thing.....I have not worked since we closed in January....I have spent time at home and will probably like to start working somewhere in the fall. This has been an interesting journey.....I always think of myself as a child of God first....but people identify me with this jewelry store....some treated me differently because i owned it....and now some people treat me differently because I don't It's very telling. Interesting, hard times lay ahead. Be secure in your relationship with God.

I've seen some closings in PA as well. Mom and Pop antique places(that have been there since???), a while back our Ames closed and another one the next town over, also I've hears business has really slowed for Wal Marts. Our BP closed and reopened under new management (???)
