The older I get, and less able to participate respectably, the more I cherish small time sport: local elementary, jr. high, and high school games, local racing, on up to college sports where the competition and participation is REAL. No money, no contract, no tv, just pure, unadulterated contest. Grab a hot dog, some popcorn, and a coke and enjoy! It'll grow on you!

Maybe some of you had the same experience:
When you were young, sports was fun. Nerf football, whiffle ball, tag, bike riding.... you played and had fun. You tried to balance the teams and each had
winners and loosers...
Even in school it was OK, then came little league...
And winning, sorry, whining was everything.
Politics, best players, etc... it just ruined sports.
Sunday was Ok as a bonding time but even then it got boring just sitting there so you lost interest or became addicted. Seems one extreme or another to me.
Is it all about testosterone, adrenaline rushes, thyroids? Maybe. Maybe its just something God put into men to make them what they are - workers, soldiers, Dads. Thanks God.
And although about the only sport I enjoy watching is soccer, I still have enough interest in tools, hunting, and warfare to satisfy the little boy part.
Fortunately the Wife just accepts it as - the way things are.

Faline butting in to the men's site again (you guys...just tell me to get LOST, already!!!!). I am a fitness trainer and there is a great deal to marvel at in great sportsmen and women. Our bodies are incredible gifts from God, and when they are trained to a high level...it's a wonder to behold. I'm not a HUGE sports fan, but I can certainly appreciate the high level of skill and ability and training that goes into sportsmen. It's quite wonderful.

PC gaming is the only sport I'm actually interested in.
You and me both. I suppose it just has something to do with what you're around and raised with. I was raised playing Baseball and Football, but for my birthday one year I got a Sega Genesis. Needless to say, my clicking finger is much better than my throwing arm these days. However, I do wish I had the money to buy another skateboard. It's been years.
I agree with the competition thing, wanting to be better, striving for a goal, that kind of thing. It still translates into many other things, even gaming. I'd venture so far as to say that the guys who play the Madden football games professionally are just as dedicated as the actual football players.

I think it is a core element of our being: competition, achievement, improving oneself, pushing oneself, striving toward a goal...that kind of thing. Sense of accomplishment, building character, beating odds, going through pain, learning to accept victory and defeat...sport is a mirror of life, in a microcosmic way.
I miss competition. It is very metaphoric too, maybe that is why Paul drew so many analogies from sport and competition- primarily foot racing.
could not have said it better myself...well gotta go I am about to watch the Houston Dynamo play....ps. did anyone see the NBA draft, that beasly kid has a future....alright :heh
