i know how to crochet to some extent... if it can be a solid square i can do it. but i didn't know i was technically doing tunisian and double crochet stitches and couldn't read a pattern to save my hide. my dear Memere taught me some about 20 years ago, but i had the worst time getting the finer points of it. i was unable to learn even from the best static pictures and drawings in books. The cool thing about the youtube videos is that i can pause and replay any part my eyes miss, instead of pestering someone (my elderly but spry French grandma) to show me again and again. Its really nice with my short term memory problems.
Anyway, here are some links to some good granny square tutorials. A bit blurry, but the lady takes her time showing you the intricacies of her motions- something some other instructors seem to not find as important.

the lady had intended to do a fourth video, but never seemed to get around to it, but i learned enough from these three videos that i think i got it.
...there are some videos that are much clearer, but not as beginner friendly (they assume you know more than i did)... i'll post a few of those next.

how cool is that??
i never learned, though not for lack of teachers.
i couldn't remember the steps and i couldn't see it
left-handed.. just couldn't do what they did right-handed
and couldn't transfer it to left-handed.
maybe i should try again as an adult.
thanks for posting! :thumb

Thanks, I'm like you. I can do the stitches that I learned from the static pictures, but I can't follow a pattern. These videos are great!

i can't wait to figure out tatting, ran across some video lessons i can't wait to sit down with. i'm really not a frills and lace type girl, but the process of making it fascinates me!

i'm noticing a couple different Granny Square types, but i don't know what the difference is called. The type in the first set of videos is what i like, its a more open, chunky checkerboard type is how i'd describe it. The others are only open in the first round, then the rest is basically solid.
is there a particular name for the types of Grannys these make, or are they all just 'variations' of a type?

I have been using her for over a year. She is by far my favorite person to learn from.

...
i also found a bunch of videos for the Incredible Sweater Machine! i have two of the full size Bond Knitting Frames that i have snapped together to make afghans... but since i bought them used they didn't come with a video. the booklets that came with it were not helpful (my problem, not the Bond co.)
I watched all the clips in order the other night and a lightbulb clicked on! I can't wait to get a room fixed up so i can have a dedicated table to mount my Knitter to and do some projects.
But i will probably get over excited and never accomplish anything :doh :aha
...i have gotten 3 'perfect' granny squares done so far... it takes me about 20 or 30 minutes to make one, i have ripped out about 10 squares worth of mistakes, but now i know what they look like and am not scared to backtrack because i know what i am doing finally!
i have a few with a number of mistakes that i didn't catch before finishing, its my learning curve.
i think i'm just going to make a pile of squares randomly, whatever colors, and then stitch them together when i have enough...
this is so fun!

i hope i'm smart enough to be able to figure out how to make this soon:

its from my Mad About Scraps book.
the colors they used are nice and i like the dimensional flower shape. pretty but not too frilly. Very beach house.
