USA Today on “Salad Bar Religion”

Circus Church

USA Today describes Americans’ taste for picking and choosing among religious ideas as “salad bar” religion. This is an apt description of evangelicals as well who now increasingly view cardinal doctrines like the deity of Christ, a literal hell, the substitutionary atonement and the Second Coming as optional. Here’s the story.

That is an excellent metaphor for the situation.

With some evangelicals, how wise is it to selectively pick-and-choose passages in the Scriptures, like some "salad bar?" Why would a person say they "believe in Jesus", or call themselves a "Christian", and yet, decide they don't believe in, let's say, hell? In essence, that person is thinking of themselves "wiser" than Jesus -- as in, they think they know the "real truth" about hell, and Jesus didn't know what He was talking about. What kind of thinking is that? What are mere men, just dust and ashes, who quickly pass away, think they are going to say when they face the eternal, holy God, when they have tinkered with His Word in some way? Oh, how easily men can be fooled, and made foolish, by the enemy of their souls...
