Priscilla Shirer explains how she now views prayer:

Most of my prayer time is filled up with what I'm saying to Him, as opposed to just being quiet and actually giving him an opportunity to speak to me. And of course I've thought about hearing the voice of God all my life, and I've thought about wanting to hear Him, but it never occurred to me that I needed to consciously go into His presence with my mouth closed, giving Him an opportunity to get a word in edgewise. And so I've just begun in my prayer life over the past year of my life to make a conscious effort to be in a time of prayer, and yes, to speak to Him, but to consciously say, okay, I'm done talking now, because I'm just gonna sit here in the stillness and wait to see what it is that you want to say to me.
To understand what Shirer means by "stillness" and "go into His presence," a look at contemplative teachers she resonates with is vital. On her website (now in an archived file), Shirer recommends several contemplative mystics such as Calvin Miller (Into the Depths of God), Madame Guyon, Brother Lawrence (who danced violently like a madman when he went into contemplative states), Richard Foster, and Jan Johnson (When the Heart Waits). These authors have all played significant roles in the advancement of contemplative spirituality within Christianity. While Shirer gives a disclaimer that she may not agree with everything these authors write, she does not warn her readers about the main thesis of these author's books - contemplative mysticism - but says they will encourage and challenge you. That's like giving a child a handful of jelly beans, with 80% being poisonous red ones and 20% other colors, and saying, "They might not all be good for you, but I'm not going to tell you which ones are harmful so enjoy." This kind of disclaimer means nothing except to say, "Hey don't blame me if you get hurt." In March of 2006, Shirer participated in the CCN Be Still project with contemplatives Dallas Willard and Richard Foster. :ohno

Help!!

I was saved a little over 2 years ago and am still learning. I have watch TBN and have seen a "variety" of people who claim Jesus as Savior. Is it possible for someone in the Administation of this board to provide us with a complete list of those "Apostate" preachers and "False Prophets?' I really enjoy this RR site and would like to know whose teachings I should avoid. Thank you administrators and moderators of this site.

Dear Sing4Him,

Thank you so much for the list. I had no idea the list of Apostates was so extensive. We believers are so thankful that we have a Board and Moderators that can keep us informed. You all are truly a blessing for us! May the love, grace, and mercy of our Lord and Savior continue to bless all of you and your loved ones.

Sincerely,

Born Again 2006

Has anybody sent Beth Moore any letter/e-mail or just called her about these issues?

I live in the Netherlands and at the church I attend her books are used in women's Bible studies. I have followed 2 of her studies: Daniel, and Psalms. Daniel was really great, touching and a real blessing to me and to the group who studied Daniel. Most of the women had never studied Daniel before.

I must admit that in the beginning I had problems to understand her. English is not my first language and she speaks too fast and screams when she's preaching to large groups. Perhaps that's also annoying to many other people.

I will be praying for her. She's one of the few preachers that don't hide their sinful past, but preach the solution : Jesus.

Beth Moore is being "shot down"? It seems what Beth Moore is teaching and stating that is being scrutinized and Held Up Against Scripture!

That is different that making attacks on her persona.

Beth HAS been contacted and she will not withdraw her advocation of the false teaching DVD called "Be Still". This is an unscriptural DVD which promotes mystical practices.

As believers we are COMMANDED to contend for the faith. Jude 3.

Would it be preferable for believerson this board and elsewhere to allow mystic doctrine with roots in paganism be condoned?? Would that be preferred over Biblical--scriptural truth?

Provide some scripture that shows mystic practices are what God enjoys, please.

(note: Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils-1 Tim. 4:1)

Yep, if one believes in Scripture, than one should naturally hold up all things to Scripture, and contend for the faith. Obviously, in desiring pure, authentic faith, a constant "chopping block" is needed for even the slightest heresy, which could lead to further heresies. The Word, the Sword, reveals all darkness, and thus, fights heresy.

The Word shows that teachers will be judged more strictly. Therefore, obviously, teachers need to take heed of that. Mixing their own ideas & natural assumptions in (man's wisdom), with God's truth (God's wisdom), can be done easily, if not careful.

I think it is neat to take the question "What do I think on this subject?", and instead, ask "What does the Word say on this subject?" Therefore, I know my thinking lines up exactly with God's holy Word, and I'm not just going by my own assumptions and "wisdom."

I've been wondering about that list.....all the bookstores listed at the beginning, is that saying to avoid them or just that they were used to compile the list?

There is a church I suddenly began looking at to attend because they have finally posted their statement of faith. That clinched it for me to consider them.

So I was looking through their website and saw this:

Beth Moore Simulcast - Aug 1&2
Living Proof Conference at Lake City Church in Madison. Friday, August 1st @6:30pm and Saturday, August 2nd @8:30am. Cost is $30.

It looks like this is something several local churches are doing together. I wouldn't have gone anyway. I saw this thread and had to go back to their site to see if that simulcast was just for this church or what.

Is this something I should ask the pastor about when I talk to him?
