Ok, I sent out the WOTM youtube video titled "A Powerful Lesson From ER" found @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06HGc_jb6tk to friends and relatives.

I wasn't making a point other than I thought how awesome it was that Ray was using that clip from ER as a witnessing tool.

I received the following response from my FIL.......

Quote:
In the Catholic Church the vehicle for what this man was discussing is the "Sacrament of Reconciliation ( commonly referred to as Confession + Penance)........

One cannot expect to just 'confess ones sins' and that is sufficient to gain Heaven.......the Lord suffered and died on the cross for our sins......that is why when some people suffer more hardship (physical, mental etc) in this life they are earning their way to Heaven in some small way by sharing in the suffering.....

The loss in " being resigned to Hell for eternity" (for example) is not physical fire ,but, being denied the Lord's gift of being able to share in the "Beatific Vision"..........no one every said it was going to be easy in this life .....

As you can tell... he is a Catholic. He knows I was brought up in the Catholic faith so I didn't understand his point of telling me what I already know the Catholic faith believes. I also don't understand what point he is trying to make if any in relevance to the video. Is he implying salvation through works? Not sure how to respond to him.

Wonder what he would have to say about Revelation 21:8 and the being denied the Lord's gift and not being a physical fire...

Revelation 21:6-8 (in KJV in case he is a KJV only Catholic):

6And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is a thirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

7He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

8But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

This is talking about two different people: the first will inherit all things, the other people will experience the second death with fire and brimstone.

Who else goes there and what's going to happen in this lake of fire?

Revelation 20:10:

10And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

More people in the lake of fire, Revelation 14:10,11:

10The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

11And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

And in the O.T., Daniel 12:2 for everlasting punishment:

2And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

In a gospel for another passage, Matthew 25:46

46And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Glad to hear you passed on the ER thing. Maybe God will work on your FIL! :)

What would you have said when you were a practicing Catholic to the verses I posted here? Wondering so I can help other see that hell is eternal.
