We have satellite hook-up because we're out in the country.

We started out with Direcway, but they were bought out by Hughes.

Early April, Hughes tried to upgrade their system (and their email services), but failed miserably. You could access your email SYSTEM (either through Outlook or by going to Hughes directly on the net) but it wouldn't release the actual emails for about a good 6 days. When it finally did all Windows users (not Mac) got a TON of spam email and the spam has not let up.

June 24th, Hughes did another attempt at upgrading their system. They informed all users emai messages might be delayed. On the 26th they informed us the upgrade had been successful. I was receiving emails just fine. Friday morning I received emails fine, same on Friday afternoon. At 8:00 last night, all of a sudden my Outlook is asking me for my password before downloading my emails. I put it in. It doesn't recognize it. I go to Hughes on the web to instead retrieve my emails there. It doesn't recognize my password. So I call Hughes. They reset my password 3 times last night and it still won't take. They tell me to give it 24 hours and if not working, call them back.

9:10 tonight it's still not working so I call them. They reset again, no go. The tech tries to access my email from his end, no go. There's nothing more he can do and says he'll put in an order for this problem. I explained how an order was put in last night and it onviously didn't do any good, and could I be shot up to advanced Tech support. He says they can't, they can only put in orders and have us wait 24 hours.

Is there any recourse I can have with Hughes? Can I ask them to deduct from my bill for each day I'm not able to access email? Is there anything else beyond that I can do?

This is just such a bad time. We're trying to refinance, and we're supposed to receive papers via email to sign and fax back. What a pain!:doh

You might want to use a different service for your email.
Such as Yahoo mail. (http://www.yahoo.com/)

I would recommend using Google's Gmail (https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&continue=http%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F%3F hl%3Den%26tab%3Dwm%26ui%3Dhtml%26zy%3Dl&bsv=1k96igf4806cy&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2&hl=en)because they offer free POP3 e-mail meaning you can access your Google e-mail through your normal e-mail software. I've noticed about a five to ten minute delay when I've sent an e-mail to myself but it is sure better than a 6 day delay. :shocked

EDIT:
Gmail's POP3 feature is disabled when you first sign up so you have to enable it. Here is a link to show you how to enable it, and how to set up your e-mail software.
Enable Gmail POP3 (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13273)

Yahoo! does too. I use Mozilla Thunderbird with my Yahoo account.
Gmail is good, however, Yahoo does provide unlimited space for free. I think Gmail is something like 6GB (but it's constantly growing).

Oh I didn't know Yahoo offered POP3 for free, that is really great. :thumb

What a pain!:dohI did the Direcway/Hughes thing before we went to Korea and remember some of the issues, but never what you are experiencing. If you are in a location where Alltel is available I would recommend you move to them. The cost is the same at 60$ and there is not any FAP to worry about, plus you can take it with you if you travel or go on vacation. I've been using it here in MS and will be able to use it back in AZ next week after I get back (our home is in the country also and it was either dialup or satellite until this came along).
