A friend asked us to look into helping him lead a CBS class at a local church. I was a little uneasy when he mentioned that both he and his wife (who is an ardent, doctrinal Roman Catholic) are leading the study. He is interested in CBS because they have no doctrinal statement that would exclude his wife.

What automatically came to mind was something like the "Alpha" course which is so generic is also plays well in RCC churches.

I looked at their newsletter on line and it was advertising a bible with the apocrypha which of course didn't make me any more comfortable.

I can't imagine what kind of indepth study of scripture could pass muster with a Roman Catholic and still be true to the saving gospel.

Has anyone had any experience with this program? I am assuming its very ecumenical. Their statement of faith looks ok, but wondering how this plays out in practice.

Thanks much.

I'm not sure I would attend a bible study led by a Roman Catholic. Your doctrine will not be the same. I was raised RC and wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole, honestly.

Well that was my initial thought as well. But I still wondered if someone has had some exposure to what they actually cover and teach in CBS.

while i have not participated personally due to time conflicts, a very close friend of mine has. she equates it with Bible Study Fellowship only not as strict. I don't know that I go to one taught by a catholic but the study in itself is supposedly okay.

I've been involved in CBS. It was a good, a little light for me but good.

I participated in Community Bible Study (CBS). We studied "The Divided Kingdom and the Minor Prophets" I still have the study material. It seemed very good to me, but we had a great leader. Maybe the type of leader would make a big difference. We had a set of questions given to us before the week. During that week, we would read the section(s) of the Bible required for that week. Then we would meet one day out of the week (Thursday, for us), and then leader or 'case leader' as he was called would lead us in the Bible study questions given us. After finishing with the questions we would all meet in another room where a lecture on the weeks study was given. In my CBS experience it was all biblically based and very good. Everyone was encouraged to bring their Bibles and if you did not do the questions given for that week, you could meet with everyone but you could not answer any questions or participate in the study, only listen.
I understand your concern about the RCC involvement. I would not like such either. But our study at CBS included a couple songs to start, the study of questions answered, and a lecture. And of course opening each session with prayer.

I don't see much about repentance on their site.:idunno

Seems rather ecumenical. I personally would not go to this.

The group I was a part of was strong in doctrine. No one could miss understanding the Gospel. I've not taken a good look at the main web-site. Our main leader is very much into Harry Ironside's work, and was strongly dispensational.
