Grave robbing has become an above-ground affair.
Gone are the days when enterprising thieves would dig up an old grave and pillage for gold teeth and rings. Today, it's mostly the bronze markers and flower vases that draw their attention.
Rising scrap metal prices, coupled with the lagging economy, have triggered a string of cemetery thefts both locally and across the nation.
"I can't think of anything lower," said David Evans, general manager for Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville. "Nothing's worse than stealing from the dead."

Some grave robbers stole the vases at my grandma and my mom grave. They are buried side by side. They stole them twice. :ohno After they were stolen, the cemetary replaced them and then they were stolen again. I don't know if they replaced them again. I will have to contact my sister and find out since I don't live in the same state where my grandma and mom are buried.

This is bad, I can only imagine what things will be like when people are in full panic mode.

I knew a gravedigger years ago who used to "remove" the flowers from the grave "when needed". He made an extra $50-$200/wk., depending on how many he could sell.
If he got off work early, he set up on the corner in town and sold them out of the back of his pickup truck.

At the cemetary where most of my family is buried, we had a rash of thefts of the Brass vases that sit on top of some graves. Like another member said, this cemetary was also hit twice.
After that, they put a huge gate on the entrance to the cemetary.

I was a thief a long time ago before I was saved. You don't have to be desperate to steal. All you need is opportunity and a market to sell it. And sometimes not even that. I used to steal jewelry from stores when I was a teenager, with a friend of mine. I'd put it in a box and hide it like treasure. Didn't even wear it. Didn't want it. I was just a thief and that's what thieves do given the opportunity. They don't see it as wrong. They know OTHER people think it's wrong but to them it's just stuff and if it's not nailed down it's fair game.:)
Oh, some people are desperate. But it's not a requirement.
Yet another sin I've been forgiven for and have repented of. So many sins to repent of and so little time...
