See it a lot at truck stops, for diesel.
Wasn't this fairly normal years ago or am I imagining it?
Back in the 1980s, Shell started the $.05 less for cash option and it spread to other dealers. I always paid cash because of it. I think somewhere in the 1990s the option was removed...probably when the pumps that can read credit cards became readily available.

I had no idea I was getting charged when I paid for gas with my Debit card, until a friend told me to look at my reciept, Yup there was an added fee for using the card, And the same with our eletric bill ... an added 2 dollars to recieve a paper statement! Sneaky little charges these days. I guess I have to be more alert and start carrying cash !!

This is illegal. Vendors are allowed to give a discount for cash, but not to charge a fee for accepting debit/credit cards. I wonder what the station manager would have said if your daughter had pointed that out. I have had to mention this a couple of times when vendors tried to charge me a fee for using my card. They'd act soooo surprised, say they didn't know...but they took off the charge and didn't try charging me again later.
I didn't know that. I remember fast food chains and some other store vendors would charge a fee, but I haven't noticed it lately. When did it become illegal? :scratch

There's one gas station in town that won't let you use your debit card for under a $5 purchase. I had stopped in one day to buy a quick snack for my dd. When they told me I just put the food back. The cashier was embarrassed and said it wasn't his rule. I don't go there anymore.

We have lots of places like that here. It ends up costing them to sell you a product if you son't spend so much money.

all the gas stations around here now have Cash price and Credit card price.
One owner told me that because of the margins on gas, he lost money every time anyone bought gas and now that people are charging 40 and 75 or more bucks for a fill up he couldn't afford to keep losing money.. so now he has cash and credit card price.
For the last 2 years the gym I work out at has a 20 dollar min for all credit card usage, and also has a 'credit card' vs. Cash price and he tells you up front, he adds 2% if you want to use a credit card.. and he says 'i'm just passing along the credit card fees'..

My daughter was in the Detroit area last weekend and used their debit card for gas. They were charged a fee of $1.50 to use the card, got about .50 in gas before the station ran out.
Yeah, I live in the Detroit area, and it's not uncommon now to see a "cash only" sign, or a sign advertising a lower price if you pay by cash.
I don't know about the running out thing, though. I haven't seen that.

Some of the stations in my area Oregon, if I use my debit card, I have to accept the 45 cent fee. same with some of the coffee shops. Then other stations have a cash/card price

If you select the "debit" option and use your pin, they can charge you a fee just like withdrawing cash from an ATM. Also, I remember in the 1980s when you would get a cash discount d/t the credit card fees at most stores. As more and more people started using credit, I think the stores have just added in the credit card fees on everything they sell. Now that prices are getting so high, they are offering the cash discount to bring in more customers.

Austrlia typicly uses a minimum purchase of $10 if you want to put it on credit card. Cash for anything less than $10 only.
