"Finally, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus."

The only tattoos that mean anything belong to the man in the pic above.

I do not like tats or piercings for that matter. Not so much because of scripture, but I find them for the most part tacky and tasteless. A lot of kids get them now with no regard for the future. I see kids in the mall with "saucers" in their ear lobes, tats all the way up their neck, eyebrows, nose, lips, and cheeks pierced..they look like freaks, yet expect to be treated like mature adults..all the while wondering why older people look at them with utter looks of confusion on their faces. They call it "art" but child pornography is called "art" by many as well. I know a lot of people with tattoos, my wife came close to getting one before she was saved.I do not condemn them, but I see no valid point for a Christian having them. As far as scripture goes, I don't think Levitical law applies to Christians today. It was given to the Jews to be set apart. Also, Jesus was the fulfillment of the law, and instituted the new covenant. I do,however, believe there is a scripture in Corinthians(?) where Paul tells us that our body is not our own, but is the temple of the Holy Spirit. This post is my opinion, I do not wish to offend anyone, but I do feel that tatoos are much more worldly than Christian.

Wow! Silas, I expected this to be a pretty controversial thread when I started it. Knowing there'd be good and bad posted, since I myself, am against tattoos.

And controversial it has been. That's Great! :yeah

But you have taken it to a whole new genre, with your post of the beating. GEEEZ, wasn't expecting that ... Quite harsh, wouldn't you say? :idunno

Not at all. Just putting in my opinion. I am a avid critic of pop culture Christianity. The verse that he put on his body was taken out of context and actually in my opinion mocks the true context. No doubt he is sincere about the Tattoo, but I am also sincere for the Living Jesus. Bearing the marks of Jesus and painting your skin is entirely different. When you have a living relationship with Jesus you don't need these external devices kind of like actually carrying a cross on wheels around.

I think there was someone around here whose son did the cross carrying thing, I forgot what it was called. I believe he witnesses to many people who probably wouldn't pick up a tract for ask questions otherwise...

I'm visiting my parents for the Christmas holidays and I went with them to their church today. My dad gave the message because their Pastor is away. He was comparing the 1st advent and 2nd advent of Christ. The promise of each, the presentation of each, the timing of each, the literalness of each in the Word... it was a really good sermon.

He ended with the differences between the two comings.

The first Jesus came in meekness (2 Cor 10v1, Col 3v12) and the second will reveal Him in power (Matthew 24v29-30, Rev. 19v1).
The first advent, He came accepting of men (John 12v47-48) and the second He will come in Judgment (Rev 19v2-6)
The first, He came in the likeness of man (Isaiah 53v2-3) and the second He will come glorified (Rev 19v1)

It was his last point that really spoke to me....

The first time He came, Jesus came as a servant (John 12v49, Isaiah 50v5-6) and the second time He comes, He will be the King of kings and Lord of lords (Rev. 19v11-16)

My dad took us to Exodus 21v1-6, where the Law teaches that if a Hebrew is bought as a servant, he must serve 6 years only. Then he must be freed.
If he is bought unmarried, he is freed unmarried. If he is bought married, he is freed married.

However, the next part goes, "If his master has given him a wife and she has borne him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself." (Meaning, if he is freed, he has to leave behind the family his master gave him.)

v.5 "But if the servant plainly says, 'I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,' then his master shall bring him to the judges." It goes on to say they will take him to a door or doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl, and he will serve the household forever.

Our Lord came to this Earth, and acquired Himself a Bride. His love for His Bride was demonstrated with a piercing as well. Only this time, the piercing was not in the ear, but in His hands and His feet. Those wounds are permanent display of affection, that He chose to serve us and that we are belonging to Him.

And just as the Hebrew servant was pierced against a door or doorpost, Jesus was pierced against a wooden cross... that wooden cross, our doorway to Heaven.

How complete the scriptures are from Genesis to Revelation... how thought out they are by our Heavenly Father. It was really a touching moment... my dad got emotional as he shared the point, and the only other time I've ever seen him get emotional in the past was giving my grandmother's eulogy. To think that Jesus chose piercings to claim us, to demonstrate His love for us... to have us belong to Him! What incredible love.

And He will come back (soon!) in glory as King of kings and Lord of lords - and we will be there with Him, never again to be separated from our perfect Groom. http://i360.photobucket.com/albums/oo42/pistache146/smileys/amen.gif

I love information like that, Pistache. Thank you. God wove so much into the fabric of the scriptures that give us beautiful pictures to help us understand that He thought everything through completely, down to the last little jot! This is also one reminder that of how much we need to Old Testament to explain the New Testament.
