Thanks!
I also meant to add that there were several things I meant to purchase that I for some reason never did. I had the money in my hand to buy some kerosene lamps I found at a flea market last week but I put them back down. No reason really. This house has a ton of them! Several other items like this too :)
God most definately has His reasons for leading each of His children to prepare in different ways. Don't worry if you haven't been led to do something other Christians are doing--stay in prayer and pray that God's will be done!

I know this is a praise and should probably go in that thread, but since so many people come to this forum wondering what they "should" do--well, I thought it might fit better here :)
Long story short is that we have been torn as to how to prepare as a family. Our flesh was worried and we felt like we should stock up or buy a house further out. However, our house is on the market and not selling and we didn't feel led by the Holy Spirit to stock up on food too much. We did, however, feel the need to be prepared. If that makes sense. We live in the suburbs on a tiny lot and I bought very basic staples that would last my famly 6 months if stretched. I read a lot about HOW to do things and bought a canner and seeds. Last week I was praying for guidance and wisdom (as usual) but it occured to me that I should just lay it before God instead of dwelling on it all the time. So I told God--I want to move to the country, somewhere with a sense of community where we can have chickens and live a simpler life...somewhere safer since we live in a suburb that is getting more dangerous, and with a basement because we are in a very tornado-prone area. I asked God if I was being selfish or discontented (is that a word) and decided to just lay it all out before Him and move on, trusting that He heard and that He would guide me. I also repented of the underlying greed and foolishness that got us where we are in the first place.
Anyways, two days later my husband and I happened to notice a house for rent and called on a whim. The rent is 1/3 of what our mortgage is currently. It is an old farmhouse on 100 acres, although all but a few of those acres are rented out to a neighboring farmer. It's about 30 minutes outside of where we are now. All the people I talked to who live nearby are very friendly. It has a barn that already has a chicken coop as well as a smaller fenced-in area for goats. Apple tree on the property and borders a small creek. On city water but there is a well. It also has a basement. Lots of wild turkey and deer on the property and no nearby neighbors so we can hunt! And best of all? The landlord gave us the first month rent free and we only had to pay the security deposit. Normally we would not have been able to pay that deposit but God supernaturally provided via an unexpected and unusual extra pay allowance my husband received this month. It was the EXACT amount of the deposit!!! There were several people fighting over this rental and I asked God to close the door if it was not His will. How could I have doubted? They chose us!!!!
So there was a reason that the Lord did not have us stock up on certain things because He has supernaturally provided a place that comes equipped with them! I don't know exactly what we are going to do with our house but I trust that God will complete what He started. I am so grateful to Him. This is such a testimony to following the promptings of the Holy Spirit!
Strangely, my husband and I both feel like this was not for us long-term. We feel that God did it not because we need to "survive" there for a long duration, but rather as an act of love--to show us that even though things are going crazy around us and we worry, that He is still on the throne and in charge!!:yeah Does that make sense? Kind of like when you buy your child something at the store because you know they will like it. You don't buy it because they deserve it or even because they need it, but you buy it because you like giving and you think they will like it. (I hope that doesn't sound prosperity gospel-ish because we are NOT into that, this is just what the Holy Spirit has placed on my heart, as well as dh's).
I am a worrier and this has been on my mind for a few years now (around the summer or fall of 2006 specifically). It is such a load off my shoulders knowing that I stopped trying to worry things right and to actually see God's hand at work. What an awesome God we serve!
Praise God and great post!

Wow, what a blessing! But has your house sold yet? Will you have to pay rent plus mortgage?

I love your testimony,
I have experienced the same things happening in my own life, and when you have been so well provided for it is hard to complain because your experience is that God provides even though you don't know how and he knows what you need before you do. It is a very neat experience and I am so happy to understand it
When my own children say "You don't care!!" when they are wanting something I look around and think how can they say that? Can't they see everything they have is because I care, so to apply that to our own Heavenly Father I notice how well I am cared for and He is always just right and on time.
Love to everyone here on RR, a wonderful place to fellowship with like minded people.

Wow... that's awesome!!! I am almost exactly in your shoes. Except I'm curious -- do you still have a mortgage on your house? I know we could find a new house or rental (to get us out of this condo), but we can't sell this for the life of us.
Any ideas? I'm not too keen on renting -- I'd like to just get out completely.

JubileeOnEarth - if you are close to a military base you can rent to the military.

The military pay for a soldiers rent. You get guarnteed rent and very good renters. While I dn't rent out my home, I'm actually considering buying additional homes to rent to the military. (I own in the Washington, DC area)
