AMSTERDAM (Thomson Financial) - Expectations at Fortis that the U.S. markets are on the verge of "meltdown" were behind the Benelux bank's decision last week to launch a sweeping recapitalisation programme, said chairman Maurice Lippens.
"We were saved at the last minute. Things in the U.S. are going far worse that people think," Lippens said in an interview with De Telegraaf.
Forecasting bankrupties among U.S. banks amid declining credit cover, and also citing Citigroup and General Motors as blue chip companies impacted by the turmoil, he was quoted as saying: "The U.S. is heading for complete meltdown."
Fortis last week surprised shareholders with recapitalisation measures worth a total of 8.3 billion euros, including a 1.5 billion euro capital hike. tf.TFN-Europe_newsdesk@thomsonreuters.com jms
It wasn't really a website press release, more or less a bad case of loose lips in front of the media...

Why in the world would ANY company put that on their website? It would be suicidal. Collusion, man, collusion is the name of the game.;)

Did you read the comments at the end refuting the article's claims? What were your thoughts on that.
What about this particular interview from a UK news site?

I am not saying that it couldn't be a hoax, it could be I guess. It wouldn't be the first and I am sure there are more to come. This one is a little harder to figure out I guess. I am leaning more toward that it is not, and as far as the reason it is not in MSM, that is not surprising...
I am sure some of it was blown out of proportion, but I have little doubt that some lose lips from some very credible people at this organization let a few things slip either intentionally or somewhat by accident.
Either way, these "statements" are not uncommon. There is a lot of litigation proceeding because of these financial entities. Some of their internal emails are amazing, many know that the U.S. system is going to implode, yet they contributed to the toxic waste anyways, saying it is all "toast"
