There was a news item recently that in some city (sorry, I forget where) any new restaurants opening cannot have a drive thru.

The reason of course is fuel conservation.

So while we're still stuck with petroleum for fuel, do you see a day coming when drive thus will be closed all together?

How much fuel a day is waste in this country because people refuse to park their cars and walk a few feet to get a fast food meal, or do their banking?

I see the day coming when they're closed, just another way the fuel crisis is affecting things.

What say ye?

I bought the gas. I made the choice. I don't see how it's the gov't business.... oh wait. I forgot. We're in the era of the nanny gov't.

Just like how here in CA they tried (and failed, this time) to pass a law banning mylar balloons because there's a .00001% chance that if your kid lets go of it, it might to fly into the power lines and cause a 15 second outage.... so since you can't handle your balloons, no balloons for you. :rolleyes

Land of the free my eye is right. :tsk

While it may be a good idea to walk more and waste less fuel...I am pretty sure the general concensus here is the less government interference in our lives the better. No way there should be a law banning drive-thrus IMO. That would be a very slippery slope with the government approval for all uses of our vehicles eventually.

A law banning drive-thrus? LOL. There are some really bright people at the helm in that city....

Well, don't forget some of the things going on that prove you have to think on a "yeah, your perceived minute contribution to the problem does matter" basis.

For example, in Las Vegas now the city is paying people to dig up their lawns and go with desert landscaping. Water is critical.

For a while now, because of smog, people in L.A. can't have gasoline powered lawn mowers, only electric.

So baning drive thrus would really not be a surprise.

Like I asked in the OP, how many gallons a day, nation wide, do you think are burned up in this manner?

Are you sure this isn't a ploy to get people to lose weight? Because if McDonald's took away its drive-thru I definitely wouldn't eat there nearly as often! :aha It sounds lazy, but sometimes it's just too much of a hassle to park, go inside, and wait to get food (especially during peak hours).
I do think banning drive-thru's would save A LOT of gas - but fast food businesses would take a big hit and I know they wouldn't let it happen on a wide scale without a huge fight.

Do the math. Lets see... :thinking

50 states, x 500 drive-thrus in each, x 200 customers a day, burning up one pint of gas while waiting in line, so divided by 8 = ?
