View Full Version : Anyone here in the military, or have a female relative who is?

I'm making up a care package for a critical care nurse in Afghanistan whom I found through anysoldier.com. She said they have plenty of femine hygine products, but she'd appreciate "other girly stuff" for her nurses. I have some body butters, lotions, shower gels, flavored lip glosses, shampoo & conditioner, etc., but was wondering - do they have to wear government issue undies, or can I send them brightly colored and pretty print cotton panties? I figure that would still be practical, but help them feel a bit more feminine.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I did find a pretty scrub cap for her on eBay which I hope I win; I can't think of what else they might need that will travel well. Of course I'll include some snacks and goodies too!
Thanks.

I'm in the military but I'm not sure what underwear women can wear when deployed.

I don't how feasible it would be for the soldier you're supporting, but and CD's and DVD's seem to be popular among the soldiers my buddies sent packages to.
That's a great care package you've got going there. I would've loved to have had that stuff while in bootcamp...I can only imagine how happy they'll be to get it in Afghanistan.

Thanks. I'm really excited about this particular sailor (she's in the Navy) - she's the contact person and wrote quite a bit about herself, and ended with a Scripture reference, so I know she's a Christian. She didn't mention having a DVD or CD player (she did say their living conditions are pretty primitive), but with the letter I'll enclose I'm going to ask her -I'm sending this package specifically to her and would like to continue to support her and her nurses; there's just something about her that makes me feel she's very special. She also asked for clothing for the nationals; she said that often they come in so badly injured - including the children - that their clothing has to be cut off. They need something to wear when they go home - or as she put it, "if they go home." :(
I ended up with a set of eight body butters in all kinds of yummy flavors, a set of eight lip glosses flavored like popular candies, raspberry shampoo & conditioner, panties, two scrub caps (which she requested), deodorants, pudding cups, Cheez-its, granola bars, chocolate chunk cookies, Chocolate Skittles, nuts, drink mix, Spaghetti-O's.....I can't remember it all! Of course there's a New Testament (the Gideons gave me a supply), a magazine, and I even jammed every available cranny with gourmet tea bags until I couldn't possibly fit another thing - I have lots of lotions and shower gels left for another package. There are new flat rate Priority Mail boxes just for APO and FPO addresses that are much bigger than the older flat rate boxes. Only $10.98 regardless of weight!
Doing this is so much fun it oughta be illegal! :lol2

I am not sure you are allowed to send Bibles, check with the website again. I thought I remembered something about not having any religious materials that were not Islamic and not sending explicit materials (Playboy, etc).
One of my friends is an MD in the Reserves. She has been on two tours. She always did have access to a DVD player and said DVD's are always wanted. The care packages I sent I always told her that if she didn't want/need anything to pass it along to the others in her unit. She said that the ladies usually have access to a bx, but it is usually not well stocked with amenities that women like. I remember Lisa requesting certain brands of stuff that she did not have access to. Combination shampoo conditioners were popular, as well as brand name sanitary products, apparently all she had access to was army issue nasty stuff.
I am sure if you decided to send underwear, it would get used by someone. I tried to organize a weekly care package here at work, and I usually got lots of varied things. They liked having books, candies, and puzzle books. She also requested tank tops with built-in bras, she liked the comfort and weight of them under her scrubs.

Walker,
You can't send a bunch of Bibles or tracts which might be used for prosyletizing, but it IS alright to send religious material for the soldier's personal use. So, one small NT and a couple of Chick tracks is fine.
I know porn is prohibited, and you're not supposed to send pork products although I was talking to a guy from the National Guard earlier today and he said they LOVE getting Spam!
The soldiers usually ask for things they need, are missing from home, or can't get. I like the idea of a tank top with shelf bra; I'll have to keep my eyes open for some - thanks for the idea!
I found out tonight that a bank about 20 miles from here will take packages for soldiers and arrange to have the postage paid for - that would be great, as it would free up more money to packages!

In His love,
:hug Please thank her for her service. All of our armed forces men and women have been on my heart this 4th of July. Where would we be without them?
