I remember viewing this back then. Very touchy feely. Very unscriptural.

The social gospel....God's smiling down on us saying "atta boy, atta girl". LOL. I wish someone would send some stuff about this guy to Jonathan Falwell. I'm just sick about him inviting Warren to his "Innovate Church" conference.

well I do agree that God makes all unique with diferent talents and abilities and while we may not always be in the ideal job to use all our giftsts due to just needing to survive I do agree that we are all gifted differently.

I do think there is somewhere where it says God delights in us....of course it is referiing to belivers - will have to look for it.....But yes.....if tis was a group of business man - the gospel must be preached first...and then we can talk about how to best live out that faith!

Most verses regarding delight pertain to man delighting in the Lord.
The verses of God delighting are found in the Old Testment in regards to offerings and men doing righteous things such as in Pro.15:8--prayer.
I do not see God delighting in men in scripture. God delights in His Son. Mat. 3:17

This is how God sees man prior to repentant faith in Jesus:

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away Is.64:6

He used the usual tactics. It in part can be justified Scripturally and in part is in total violation of Scripture. All the "feel good" stuff about God "delighting" (we don't have to get hung up on that exact word I don't think, any place where God approves of his followers should do) in His people is true enough, but forgetting to mention that to get to that position you must be a Christian puts it beyond the pale. Notice also the appeal to emotion with the cute little story that has nothing to do with Scripture, emotional (rather than rational) appeal being part of the pattern. If he did try any rationality or Scriptural backup, it would be out of context snippets that would stand little scrutiny in comparison with reality.

Putting it another way: God delights in you being you and doing what you are "wired" to do, but doesn't mention that the primary "wiring" is to be a follower of Him, which since Christ, being a Christian. Failure to do that means that you are NOT doing what you are "wired" to do.

Take that with the proviso of C.S. Lewis, if it helps, use it, if it doesn't, forget it.

Warren invented the S.H.A.P.E. program and calls it scripture.

The Bible teaches that God gives every believer certain spiritual gifts to be used in ministry (1 Cor. 12, Rom. 8, Eph. 4). However, I believe spiritual gifts are only one part of the picture. In my opinion, spiritual gifts are often overemphasized to the neglect of other equally important factors. Natural abilities that you were born with also came from God. So do your experiences and inborn personality traits. Your Creator planned these factors as well.

There is no magic process to “having” spiritual gifts - they are gifts of God and cannot be controlled by man, neither can they be sold.

susanb, while I don't agree with Rick Warren or his body of teachings, I actually think he got the bit you quoted right.

We all have spiritual gifts, natural abilities, life experiences and inborn personality traits that combine in the believer to serve His purposes. Some of these may be "obstacles" that a believer must overcome with the Spirit's help to strengthen other traits He wants you to have, some are ready to harness for His purposes and some can be "thorns in the flesh" to keep the believer on the straight and narrow.

Too often in some denominations the requirement for "spiritual gifts" as some mystical thing go overboard. Personally, I don't seem to have any of the gifts active, but I don't need them for my faith to be strong. I have had a gift visited on me for my edification, I think because I looked down on those who overemphasized spiritual gifts. It wasn't to stop my skepticism of churches that push the gift thing, but to let me know that they are there and they are real.
