I'm posting this in the woman's forum because in most cases women do the majority of family grocery shopping. :) To be fair, men can reply to this thread too. :aha
Anyway, I went to the grocery store on Monday, there was hardly any sugar on the shelves. No 8 lbs bags at all! Just a few ( maybe 20) 4 lb. bags. I meant to ask the manager why the low amount, but forgot. Today I had to run some other errands and stopped in for a couple of items at a different grocery store. Same deal... almost out of sugar. :candle This time I asked the checker if she knew why they and the other store had such a low supply. She had no idea.
These weren't Big Box stores like Sams, or Costco, but chain stores none the less. Brookshires and Super One. These 2 stores are in Texas and Louisiana, not sure where else?
I know it's canning season, but I've never seen this lack of sugar in our local stores before. Even in canning season. :idunno
Anyone else notice this at their local stores?

Thanks :hug
I'm very curious if others are seeing low sugar in their stores? It seems strange to me as even when others were reporting on low or restricted rice quantities, our stores here had plenty of rice. So this sugar thing has me wondering... :thinking

I have a huge tupperware cannister that holds those 25lb bags of sugar. But I always make sure I have another 25lb bag in storage. Running out of sugar and toilet paper are my worst fears:fear. I'm ADHD and therefore have a deep relationship with my sugar.:hyper I always knew this day would come:ohno.
I suggest if you don't have a lot of room for storing, at least double-up.
Thanks for the heads-up:shake

You're welcome, Sophie. :hug
I'm hoping it's just a fluke with these 2 stores. Brookshires owns Super One. Brookshires is a full service grocery, where as Super One is a bag it yourself. Maybe they are having trouble with their distributer or something? :idunno I haven't check out Wall-Mart to see how their supply is.
I do have about 30 lbs. of sugar put by, but I buzz through it pretty fast. I feed the Hummingbirds and have 4 feeders out right now, which feeds a flock of about 50 hummingbirds. I refill the feeders about 4 times every 7 days. I've been feeding them every Summer for the past 10 yrs and think that many of them each year are return visitors. :) I'd hate to run out before the Summer is over as they become kind of dependent on the feeders once the Honeysuckle and Jasmine in our area quits blooming. They stay here until about the middle of October. I'm always buying "one more bag" because of those little guys.
I know it's not the same as there being no sugar for us humans, but I hate to think of my little 'Hummers" looking for their "Juice" and finding their feeders empty. :)

Hi Pear! :wave
That thought crossed my mind also, but I've never seen the sugar shelves bare here during canning season before. I also noticed that Flour was kind of low too. Not as obviously low as the sugar, but the flour and sugar shelves in these particular 2 stores are usually full to overflowing. It looks weird and I thought of pictures from Russian grocery stores. Sporadic shortages on different products. :twitch

could be an issue with restocking during canning season, with the gas prices being so high..

I haven't seen no sugar but the shelves aren't full. I live in a farming community where the strawberries are in full and the other berries are also coming in so I suspect that's where it's going. Plus, our Wal*Mart has had sugar on sale, 5 lbs for $1.65, so people may be stocking up while the stocking's good.

I have noticed this as well. The grocery store manager keeps saying "there are supply issues." In the meantime I've never seen shelves completely bare of certain products until now (it varies what they are though). I've been seeing it for the last month or two on a very regular basis. One week, no chicken, the next week, no salad greens, etc.
